    On Ikea Kitchens.....

They are great value and come in the same modular sizes as regular UK kitchens except for the follwoing differences:-

The base units are 600mm deep so require a 610mm worktop (odd size).

There is no service void left behind the base units, the back simply nails directly onto the carcass, Swedish homes have all the service within the fabric of the building, we don't.

That means you need to fit the units off the wall on a batten to allow for pipework and such and then buy a slightly larger worktop, 650mm and 700mm are freely available.

Work these into your design and with a bit of thought you'll get a geat looking kitchen for a little money, but make sure you don't skimp on the fitting.

Even a hand bult kitchen looks crap if it's fitted badly.
thanks for the info i was put off an ikea kitchen buy what some other posters have said but your info has made me feel like giving them a go as the prices are really good and the kitchens look as good as dearer ranges in other stores.
Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)

They should sort it as MFI fitters dont get paid unless you sign to say you are happy.

no they couldnt fix it the manager put another fitter onto the job and when he left he said it was the best he could do but it is still out by a quarter of an inch(slope) and the joint is badly damaged, the cupboards rattle at the back because there is a large gap(the shelf doesnt meet with a straight back to it instead it curves towards the wall badly it originally curved the opposite way like a bump) where they have blown through the wet plaster wall that they were fitted on these are only two problems as there are many more and we didnt sign the form but the fitter made sure he took all the paperwork with him we havent even got our delivery note which was very strange as we couldnt understand why he took everything we had ever signed we dont have anything anymore and the whole thing is now awaiting the ombudsman decision. how can i find out if my signature was forged and what can i do?

that must be what ours has done i never gave it a thought before but now you come to mention it he took all our documents including my delivery note with my signature on it(we wondered why he took the delivery note and it made everything increasingly difficult afterwards for us), how did you find out your fitter had signed it for you, can i do anything as the kitchen is a disgrace and i am not happy at all? will the ombudsman find out if my signature has been forged?will the fitter not be in trouble for copying my signature if he has? can anyone help?

Your best bet is to go and see the Manager of the store. The HO wont be too helpful but ulimately the Manager decides if the fitter (who are self employed) stays on the books. If he has been paid for your job he can hold back money from his current job in order to compensate you.

the manager wasnt very helpful at all he said the damage to our appliances was our word against the fitter and the then when our fridge freezer froze up and we complained that it was meant to be frost free the manager turned round and said we were just trying to make money on it all, a lot of things have gone wrong and it wasnt our fault but because there is so much wrong it would seem that they are not taking us seriously they offered us £250 which wouldnt even pay for the damages to the cooker so this is why we have had to take it further we asked the manager to come round to the house but he declined and was very rude so we are hoping to show the ombudsman round the problems and hopefully we will be taken seriously.
