    On Ikea Kitchens.....

They are great value and come in the same modular sizes as regular UK kitchens except for the follwoing differences:-

The base units are 600mm deep so require a 610mm worktop (odd size).

There is no service void left behind the base units, the back simply nails directly onto the carcass, Swedish homes have all the service within the fabric of the building, we don't.

That means you need to fit the units off the wall on a batten to allow for pipework and such and then buy a slightly larger worktop, 650mm and 700mm are freely available.

Work these into your design and with a bit of thought you'll get a geat looking kitchen for a little money, but make sure you don't skimp on the fitting.

Even a hand bult kitchen looks crap if it's fitted badly.

    Hello,

We have been quoted £5,700 today for a new kitchen at MFI, but I think that is excessive. It is the Space Black range from Hygena. It is really the only one we like, after looking at B&Q, Wickes etc.

The price includes fitting from MFI, but no appliances. It is supposed to be discounted, as they currently pay the VAT. We have £1,600 of Clubcard vouchers to put towards it. We have never spent this much before, and cant really afford it (cashing in a share ISA after saving for 4 years)

We have a 12x12foot kitchen, but the units are only for a L-shape down two walls, but it is for 17 units, sink and taps.

Just wondered what peoples views were on the price, please?

17 units seems like a lot to me, think about how many you will actually need.

The space black range is new so discounts are not really available for it.

Think about the quality of worktops, taps and other bits and pieces, this is where the price goes up.

Go back to the sales person and say it's out of your budget and is there any movement on the price, ask them to speak to the manager if they can't do anymore. If they want the sale they will do all they can to get it.

Does anyone have any views on Homebase's Marenello (solid cherry & veneers) range? Also, are Homebase a nightmare like the rest of the DIY shops? Saw the display yesterday and it looks lovely, currently 50% off so very keenly priced!
  • Have you tried Focus? I went in there last night as I'm after a new kitchen, and they've got some bargains, there's a '60%' off sale at the minute, and if you've recently bought a house, you can get an additional 10% off car for 6 months!

Prices do seem better than B&Q's, and the kitchens seem almost identical!

    Hoep this helps

Our nearest Focus is in Reading and I just can't face going as far as that to get a kitchen (would do it for John Lewis though :D). But thanks anyway!

be careful as our mfi fitter was terrible and we are now having to seek help from the ombudsman because they cant even repair the damages they have left us with i would not recommend mfi fitters although i know we shouldnt assume they are all as terrible as the one we got landed with but if i were you i would try and get a local fitter instead and it would probably cost less because the shops own doesnt mean it is of any kind of standard or peace of mind believe me:eek:

ps: ours is the space white kitchen good luck and please be careful especially because you are cashing your savings in you want to be completely satisfied at the end , having mfi fit a kitchen has been the worst thing that we have ever done and it certainly isnt a dream kitchen we are so upset they need to have a better customer aftercare service but they clearly arent bothered once theyve got your money also they get you to sign a customer charter which we didnt even know we'd signed so be careful they get you to sign it when you place your order and it is things like no refund if you change your mind on any product after 7 days of it being delivered etc we were unaware we had even signed it as we havent bought anything big like a kitchen before and thought we were signing to just order it,good luck!

So sorry to hear that across, and thank you for your post - appreciate it.
  • Got our kitchen from B&Q, good value for money even though we bought it before they had the special discounts, only a small galley kitchen mind you but spent about £5k on it which included plastering, minor building work, decorating. We were told not to use B&Q's fitter by the guy from B&Q as they are very dear so we used a local builder. We also had this excellent cooker;

Can't fault the cooker and the company that I bought it from.
    I hate migraines.
