Good thinking Premier, I may go down that route :)

I will more likely get home today and have my pipe dreams ruined when the missus says that we will just make do with the Micra... Which is sensible I guess, spending 6 or 7 grand right not isn't exactly appealing to me, even if we can get 2k for a car worth less than £500 :D

This topic has been brained to death on the forums. Search for "scrappage". The bottom line is, find a car you want. Broker a price from an online brokers, then haggle at a dealership.

Most small cars will fall foul of the delivery time so wont be eligible for scrappage unless you are buying dealer stock.

    Why was that?

A new car built to order should be able to easily be supplied within 3 months ... assuming the factory is actually producing cars.

The scheme is planned to run until March next year

Or is it because of fears of the government fixed budget of £300m running out very quickly because of so many people taking advantage of the scheme?

not if they ship from brazil they wont. Or Asia. Or Mexico. Or ....

Basically you need to get stock rather than look for something in "your colour". Dealerships have build slots that they fill, then they are shipped and PDI'd. They only have 12 weeks to do this. 8 weeks shipping time plus a week build and a week PDI gives a 2 week slot. They may not HAVE a 2 week slot.

Then dont forget that there is a 2 week shutdown in july.

Hmmm, I wasn't aware of that... I wouldn't be buying to order anyway, I would need the car pretty much as soon as I had done the swap. Don't fancy waiting 3 months, having to fork out the MOT on the old car anyway (would need something to get to work in!), and then have it scrapped.

I think the scrappage scheme only makes sense on small cheap cars. You will be able to get more than the £2k of an expensive new car anyways.

But something like an Aygo (least depreciating car last year according to Parkers - £1515), will in theory work out cheaper than a 2nd hand 1 year old version.

Then buy British, or at least European. ;)

It's no point in us tax payers forking out £1000 per new car to keep car factories open on the other side of the world.

I'm not sure which company you refer to, but in many cases it is the manufacturer that usually schedules the build when the dealer submits a new order.

Yes 8 weeks is typical to build ... once it hits the manufacturers schedule.

If a dealer orders a vehicle it will be delivered once it is built. Of course the dealer then has to prepare it for sale (PDI etc)

I'm not sure where the 12 week timeframe you speak of comes in. The only 12 weeks I am aware of is that many dealers tend to only hold stock for a maximum of 12 weeks before offloading it e.g. by dealer transfer. This is because with minor model change revisions coming in as frequently as every 1/4 year, if they don't do this there is a risk they will sell a brand new vehicle with e.g. an out of date trim pack.

Edit: Oh & there's also an issue about payment of vehicles delivered. Dealers only have a certain amount of time to pay for vehicles and if they are not sold, they have to come up with the cash themselves. Off loading them shifts the responsibilty to whoever has the vehicle at that time.

The cheapest car is the Kia Picanto (with no addons/upgrades from the base model).

As I said, the £2k vehicle scrappage allowance is in addition to any other discount you should be able to negotiate.
