if you use a passport or driving/ provisional licence the photo has to be up to date, if it isnt i ask for any bank cards /credit cards, to verify the name and if i am unsure still, if they have a debit card with the cheque guarantee(100) then you know they are over 18, people have shown me out of date passports when the picture was when they were still in primary school!!!

Here is the response I got:

    Hello Gary

    Thank you for your email

The reason your partner was asked for ID is to reduce the risk of alcohol being supplied to a minor, in no way is this an allegation, however the store must use their discretion.

Obviously there is a line we need to draw as if a father is buying alcohol and his 3 year old daughter is with him then the colleagues use their discretion and see that clearly the 3 year old is not going to be provided with alcohol by her father (or I would hope not)

However I'm sure you can understand that things are different when (for example) a 20 year old is with his 19 year old girlfriend who looks younger than 18 and has no ID with her but he does, it can be perceived that he is supplying alcohol to someone under age who is in fact perfectly within the age limit, but cannot prove it, again this is in no way and allegation we just have to be sure, especially with laws nowadays being so strict.

Simply, we have to ask, if there is any doubt in the colleagues mind they have to ask everyone involved for ID, just as in a bar if one person is buying a round in everyone in the group is I'd. As the consequences for the colleague and the company would be dire, if the colleagues did not ask and was found to have sold alcohol to someone under the age of 18.

I hope this is more clear, I would like to point out that our colleagues are not in the habit of declining the sale of anything for the fun of it, we are simply adhering to our policy and the law.

    Thanks again for your email

    Kind Regards
