New Nappy Cake

Had an interesting conversation with Trading Standards or Consumer Direct as they are now known as, so thought I would share it with any fellow nappy cake makers out there....... as you all know nappy cakes are baby gifts that are created for new parents and contain a variety of baby goodies, according to TS the soft toy that is often included in or on a nappy cake must be a baby/nursery soft toy ...that states it is safe from birth onwards, fortunately I only use baby safe soft toys in all my nappy cakes anyway but I know some soft toys are usually from 36 mths onward so I always check, thought I would pass this info on but it may be worth a call to TS yourselves if you are thinking of selling them as a business as there is a list of safety regulations that now cover the design and selling of these gifts including info on nappy's themselves, inbox me if you would like further details....... Thanks janey21 I was considering some teddies that are suitable from 12months as they seem cheaper but will stick to new born if I do the craft fair.
Do you know about what insurance may be needed?Looking forward to new ventures :beer:0 -

Hi Zangels
Yes, you will need public liability insurance, usually around £36-£50 per year, not found it any cheaper as yet and of course it depends on the amount you are covering yourself for, might be a good idea to go onto one of the price comparison sites or just Google 'public liability insurance'.
Glad you are going for the newborn soft toys if you are selling to the public, Trading Standards really keen on that aspect of nappy cake making, my pet hate is the cheap looking tacky soft toys, I think a good quality soft toy really is the icing on the cake lol..... Janey0 -
I suppose if I get the insurance I will have to make sure I keep doing craft fairs and try and advertise as it would be a waste of money to do just one craft fair.
I managed to make a 3 tier cake using less nappies, I used 60 in my first! So will be able to spend the money saved on a soft toy.Looking forward to new ventures :beer:0 -

i suppose craft type fairs would be the best place to sell these but has any of your ever tried car boot sales? is this a silly idea im just looking in general were different places might be a good choice to sell them0

What I find a bit strange is that we bought our daughter a "Me to you" tatty teddy "My first Christmas" set for Christmas which had a photo album, photo frame and a tatty teddy bear in it. I checked the bear and it says not suitable for under 36 months. Surely these would need to be suitable from birth, considering that it is for "My first Christmas"?0
