Hi Janey, I think it's a bit confusing what TS say about what's acceptable and what's not.

I use "from birth" soft toys but have a few I bought a while ago that are 6 mths +. I do leave all labels on but it seems this makes no difference.

The thing I am puzzled about is dummies and clips (with bling etc). I can understand the concern with beads etc but surely these have been passed by TS to be able to sell them in the shops. Maybe they get passed if they have an older age group label on them.
I do use dummies but from birth.

Also, pins! I wouldn't dream of putting pins in a cake but I do occasionall use safety pins to attatch Booties. Is this not acceptable either? :(

What about Nappy Pins? It doesn't make sense! I can see the potential harm if a baby got hold of things (even toiletries) but it's the mother who is using them, not the baby.

Do you think TS are going over the top a bit? Will have to look at the contents in Baby Gift Baskets in Stores to see what they put in or rather don't!

Thanks! anyway for the tips :T

    Hi Moonpenny
TS do my head in to be honest with you, because believe it or not their advice differs from county to county simply because as they said and I quote "the Law can be interpretated in 100s of ways", I have spoken with 2 different counties and both were very keen on the soft toys and gave me exactly the same advice stressing the from birth element, so I get that and to be honest I agree with it and for me personally I would only use a proper nursery range of soft toys, but with regards pins they were referring to sewing pins, nappy pins are fine as they are a safety pin anyway, so I use them if needed.
    As for the dummies etc....
this article was published last July 2011............
Parents are being warned against buying potentially dangerous "bling" baby dummies decorated with beads and gems.
Trading standards officials say the colourful dummies, which are being sold online, present a choking hazard to a baby or small child.
Safety standards ban adhesive labels and decorations from being fixed to dummies, according to Medway Council's trading standards service in Kent.
Samples of the customised baby soothers were tested and found to breach the safety controls that have to be met before they can be put on sale.
A council spokesman said: "Not only do they feature prohibited decorations but the hand-glued beads and gems were also found to be easily detached, posing a huge danger as they could easily choke a baby or small child."
Mike O'Brien, the authority's community safety councillor, said: "No baby should ever be given a dummy that has anything that might come off and choke them.
"Although we understand that parents naturally want their children to have nice things, it is vital that only safe products are given to youngsters."
    Then this last month http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/local/localbrad/9488157.Bradford_mum_issues_alert_on____bling_dummies___/
I don't sell them, never have, but I know a lot of sellers on Facebook do and some have been stopped from what I can gather, as you can see from the newspaper article above.
I think there will always be something TS can pick fault with but on saying that safety is paramount in the world we live in and it's better to be safe than sorry, don't you think?
Have you done any Gift/Craft fairs lately? Do you have a Facebook page? I sell quite a bit on Facebook, they hold online craft fairs which can be fun.

Hi Janey, I totally agree with the articles on the "bling" Dummies etc. I don't like them anyway but would steer away from anything like it.
I only use Dummies "from birth" or if I do a cake with 3-6mths clothes etc - then I would use 3-6 mth Dummy.

Do you think the small safety pins (not nappy pins) are o.k to use? I use them to attatch Booties sometimes.

I only buy "from birth" toys but I just wondered how the rules apply if you do a cake for an older baby, say, 3-6 mths or 6-9 mths and bought corresponding toys etc.

No, I don't do fairs or anything, or even have a facebook page. Just word of mouth locally I'm afraid. (would be impossible doing fairs as I don't drive!):(:(:(

About the soft toys again, a few weeks ago I bought one of those lovely little blue (something friends- forgot what they are called!) softies from Clintons. I asked the assistant to check if there was an age on it and there wasn't.
Next time I went in, I picked another character and went to pay for it and noticed on the label it said "not suitable for under 6 mths.
I put it back and returned first one and got a refund.
You'd think the manufacturers would at least make them with all the same age range.
Think it must have been because some have longer pile fur than others.

I am now a pain checking all the labels.:rotfl:

    Hi Hun
I use proper nappy pins and still put a caution sticker on the back saying 'Please take care when dismantling contains nappy pins' maybe you could do the same with yours, just covers you then, I know some nappy cakes are made using nob pins I think it was those that TS meant, can you remember years ago they used to use them in men's shirts? Don't think they do now.
I use double sided tape to attach some of my things, doesn't damage anything and either peels off or can be removed when clothing etc is washed.
Manufacturers are the worse culprits and they get away with it, makes me so angry, think I mention earlier, I have seen soft toys that have Baby's 1st Bear emblazoned across the front then on the tag it says not for under 12 mths or 36 mths and yes sometimes it is because of the length of the fur etc, I usually go for the nursery range, Keel, Aurora, Jelly Cat, etc do some lovely ones.
I think if you are putting an age range on your nappy cakes eg 3-6 mths, 9-12 mths etc then yes I would think toys to correspond to that age range would be acceptable as long as they are clearly marked as such, for eg I do an 'Hello Kitty' pamper cake for little girls and I market it for 3 yrs and above, simply because the soft toy is for ages 36 mths and over.
Shame you can't drive, but a Facebook page would be an advantage for you, if you need any help just let me know.

I think im maybe charging ahead of myself but the craft fair is March 4th and I have not made anything yet. Except 1 nappy cake, I am having to buy everything that I need and its costing a fortune. At least if I have a facebook page stuff can go on there aswell once its made.
