New Nappy Cake

Hello
My sister is expecting her first baby in August after 3 years of trying. I would like to make her a lovely nappy cake with some bits for her in too. I've no idea where to start, and I know you must be asked this question lots, but if someone could give me a general list of what I need - I know nappies, socks, ribbon, blankets etc. What about the little things which help you make it? And do you put it on a board or not? Where do you get most of your things from? It seems Asda is a good place?
Thanks for any help, and sorry if you're having to repeat yourself!
I have only just started making them and found that there are some good videos on you tube to give you the general idea. Apart from the things that make the cake like nappies, blankets etc, I use rubber bands to keep the nappies rolled up and large rubber bands or curling ribbon to put around the nappies when they are placed all together. I put mine on cake boards too.
Some people use nappy pins or safety pins to keep blankets etc in place, but I find that if you tie the ribbons on securely enough you don't need them.
I have bought a lot of my stock from Matalans and anywhere else that I see bits and bobs but I think Asda is good place to go too.
I'm no expert as only made a few cakes, but am happy to give you advice and there are plenty of ladies on this thread that have been making nappy cakes for some time and will help you too.0 -
Here are my latest three cakes
Haven't had a chance to wrap them yet and still waiting for my blue pull bows to be delivered!0 -

As Sweetpeea32 said - you tube is your best bet to see how they are put together and then have a go at the method you like best. It really is trial and error!
Can I just say though, if you are only making one cake, don't go overboard on buying stuff. It is really easy to get carried away and end up with loads of stuff you can't fit into the cake anyway.
There are loads of different styles.
I tend to make quite "plain" cakes with clothes on outside plus stuff inside. Then there are the ones with most stuff inside or others who have allsorts dripping off the cake.
You only have to look at the US sites to see how different they can be.
Sweetpea32, you are going "great guns" with your cakes. Well done! Have you got orders for them?
One note of caution though - be careful about taking the wrapping off sponges as once air gets to them they discolour. If I buy a pack that I need to split, then I wrap in cello.0 -
No, haven't got any orders yet, but haven't had a chance to do much promoting as I've got a toddler and a 6 week old baby who have been keeping me busy. Now that I have done a boy and girl 3 tier and 1 tier I am going to make myself a poster with photos of them and advertise in local shops and there are some local shops that I am going to approach to see if they will consider stocking them. A facebook page is next on my agenda though once my bows have been delivered so that I can get some nice photos of them and post them on there. My fiance's Mum said that she will take some photos into work and show people there too.
Thanks for the advice about the sponges. They were part of a pack so I will take your advice and wrap them in cello.0 -
Thankyou for your advice - I'll be going into town sometime this week to get my bits and bobsSealed Pot Challenge #817 £50 banked0

Can anyone help me with facebook please? I've got a normal account and am trying to set up a page for my cakes. I started it earlier and put a photo on it but that's it. How do I go back and edit the page because when I am logged in it just takes me to my normal account and I can't see how I access the nappy cake page?0

When you are on your nappy facebook page look to the right and it should say 'Use facebook as' and it should name your nappy facebook page. Click on it and it should give you control of your nappy facebook page. I think that's right, hope it works!0

I found a link under "edit profile" that says "use facebook as page" but when I click on it the screen just freezes. Maybe it's a problem with Facebook. I will try again later.0

Hello everyone!
I haven't managed to get on here for a few weeks as I've been a bit of a walking zombie since my 5 month old has apparently forgotten how to sleep!!
I've just read back on the posts I've missed and can I just begin by saying well done for putting that silly woman back in her place! It's very sad that she has nothing better to do than put people down. What a mean, selfish and, quite frankly, stuck up person
Love looking at all your pics, they're all fab! I've now sold 3 (all through friends) and have had my first 'posting' experience!! I was going to send them via Royal Mail but once they were all packed in the boxes they weighed over 2kg therefore would've cost over £7 to post. I ended up sending them by courier through interparcel (thanks brudie25!) at a cost of £5.99 per cake which was more than I'd intended and meant not much profit but it was a learning curve! My clever husband even managed to customise the boxes to hold the nappy cakes in place and they both got there in one piece thankfully!
I've had to put it all on hold for now until my darling baby girl remembers how to sleep again as I'm only just managing day to day stuff and surviving on snatched hours of sleep here and there! I'm looking forward to starting up again once things have settled down. With my eldest starting school in september I'm hoping to have more time on my hands.
moonpenny - you were asking about boxes...I've got single wall boxes and they are, in my opinion, plenty strong enough. (The cakes I sent weighed just under 2kg) As i said before, they arrived at their destinations in one piece so I guess that's a good enough result! I also chucked them around a bit before I sent them as a test and they were fine!0
