Thanks! cherydee, but it's not muslin squares I want but Burp Cloths. The narrow oblong ones like they sell at Matalan.

    Hollie84 lovely cake!

I got some in Asda a while back - they were about £2 for 3 I think and they only had white in my local. Next time I go I'll see if they still have any and can pick a few up for you if you like!?! just send me a PM :)

Thanks Brudie - I have managed to get enough Burp Cloths to be going on with.

I am thinking about changing what I use on some cakes and I think Burp Cloths might be going "out of the window."

When you say you leave tags on everything - do you mean the fabric tags (washing instructions / size etc) or the paper tags that have the name of store and price on?

The only paper tag I leave on is the toy one.

I also take things out of packaging as it wouldn't look very nice displayed on a cake with loads of cardboard and in the wrong colours. I wrap dummies in cellophane if I split a pack (they are so expensive!)

It's "food for thought" though but, I have never seen any cakes on a website with things displayed on the outside in their packaging, especially US ones where they tend to have loads of stuff dripping off the cakes.

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone could help me here. I'm looking for a nappy cake / bouquet for a work mate. She's having a baby girl and I wanted to get her something a bit different as a gift from me. I have roughly £15 to spend (not a lot I know).

I have looked at sites and Ebay, but want a reputable seller who could hopefully deliver next week, as she's due to finish on the 8th March - if she lasts that long :)

She's a fussy so and so, not into too girly girly pink and not really into teddy bears either!!!!

Where should I be looking for the best prices and of course a nice product - or am I expecting too much for my bucks?

Any help would be greatly appreciated (ps I'm in the West Midlands if that makes any difference) xx
  • Thanks for your replies.

I have spoken again with Trading Standards and she has advised the same, to include packaging but hide it in the cake.

She did say, however, that you would also be ok to write or type the safety info/instructions word for word on to a smaller card, for example. Therefore, if the packaging is a bit bulky you can transfer the details.

Basically, she confirmed that so long as you are passing the safety info/instructions on to the buyer it doesnt matter if this is not via the packaging itself. You do need to make sure you provide details of the manufacturer of the product also.

Not sure if anybody was aware of this, I know i wasnt until I spoke with them.

    Thanks :)
  • Hello everyone!

I'm brand new to this forum although have read through the nappy cakes posts before.

I've been making nappy cakes for nearly a year, business has been quite slow but I get a few small order every now and then which I'm happy with as I've read that it can take a business a couple of years to get going.

I did a few Christmas fairs and I'm now starting to get invited to Spring/Summer ones. One of the problems I've had at fairs is that although I get a lot of interest and many people still haven't heard of nappy cakes, they tell me that they're definately interested and take my cards but then I don't hear from them again. I sell a few sock cupcakes and that's it. I'm looking for ideas of how to get people to come back to me. To be honest my business stationary isn't great, free Vista business cards are never very impressive but money is tight and I don't want to put too much of my own money in anymore so I was thinking of making up my own handout with prices and info etc.

Any suggestions on how to grow my business locally would be much appreciated.

PS. All your pictures look fab and Clarel26 - thank you so much about posting about Trading Standards, this is something that I have worried about before but you've really cleared that up for me

  • Glad to be of help Cupcake :)

I only found this forum a week or so ago and I think its great that people are willing to share their knowledge and advice.

I haven't done any fairs or anything as of yet but it is something that I am looking to do in the future. Is there any advise that you could give me regarding this? I dont want to bite off more than I can chew to start off with.

I had been advised of Vista Print and was thinking of going down that route myself. For now though my father in law has designed some leaflets for me and photocopied some at work to put me on for now. Maybe you could try something as simple as this as it wouldnt really cost you anything. :)
  • I'm also impressed how people are willing to share - it's really helpful.

Vista are fine for starting out as they are cheap and you get stacks of business cards and only pay postage so are better than nothing in my opinion. I've also got my product labels from Vista which are a better quality than the business cards and I order them when they have free offers on and there again only pay postage. (The small circle ones are the perfect size for sticking on the bottom of silicone cupcake cases!)

I'm only trading by word of mouth and my FB page at the moment and this how I've been invited to fairs. I advertise on the local selling pages and I think that's where the fair organisers are finding me. I did 3 at Christmas but was asked to more but couldn't fit them in around work at the time but have more time now and maternity leave in the Summer.

It really is a case of practising at the fairs and don't be disinheartened if it doesn't go well, look out for the small charity fairs for schools and playgroups (I haven't done any big ones yet) as the pitch prices are low so you wont have so much to loose. Once you've done a few you'll get to know the feel and what sort of thing to take along with you.

    Hope that helps

Hi s23xy_c - see you are a night owl like me!

I use large (thin) elastic bands to hold the tiers but then I tie curling ribbon around and remove the bands.

Hope that helps! I lay in bed for ages with designs going round my head. Sad! I know but can't help it when I have an idea.
