Hi lastminutej
On subject of names - since I started, I have called myself "The Pata-cake Bakery", but am not keen on it really and there is so many different ways to spell it. Still can't come up with anything else yet. How about you?
You mentioned "Moonpenny" before - well it's the name of a daisy.
I worked in a Ceramic Studio for years and we did a range called Moonpenny's and the name just stuck in my head.
sazzlepink, I tie all my bows by hand. I do the 2 loop thing where you cross one over the other.0 -
They're gorgeous Moonpenny, so neat too, how do you fold the clothing?

xHi SallyUK
Your lemon cake looks lovely!
I don't know why, but I can't seem to sell lemon cakes and I think they look really lovely and "fresh". And they are neutral which is always good.
Done a few Mini Shoe cakes!0 -
Hi Moonpenny
I like pata-cake. I started off making pots of gold and flannel reindeer and called myself Golden Gifts - now I don't like it but can't think of anything else which works!
I thought of Happy Nappy Cakes but it's already been done, my oh suggested Crappy Nappy Cakes!!
Still like Moonpenny though - Moonpenny's Miracles?:)

I'm getting all my cakes professional photographed this week, I'm v excited! Just need to sell some now!! I have lots of people saying "I'll have one when ***** is due, hope they mean it!"
Hi natnat,
Hope you don't mind me asking but was it easy to find someone to photograph your cakes?

Hi
Can anyone help me with a couple of technical business questions? 1. Do u need to register a business name, it's obviously not a limited company? 2. Do you have public liability insurance?
Thanks
You don't need to register your business name, as you will be a sole trader (or partnership if there are two or more of you) not a limited company. However you do need to register with the Inland Revenue as Self-Employed. I can recommend doing their course on becoming self-employed, it's free and held at your local tax office, and you can learn all about any expenses that can be allowed for when paying tax - the staff are very friendly and happy to answer any questions.
You will need public & product liability insurance, I use GM Imber, but there are others around. You will be able to get more information on the small business board in the Work & Benefits section of this site.0 -
Hi ladies
For those of you who make towel cakes too. M&S have a 20% off household goods but it ends today instore & online. I got 6 piece towel bale for £6 instead of £7.50. So quite a good saving. In white, cream, light brown, blue!!:j0 -
Hi Popkins, I struggle with taking good pics too!
I have a "not great" Digi camera but I can't get the lighting right. I end up taking them in the bedroom I work in which is North facing. (That's why they all have the same background)
Have tried a white sheet and other things as background, but they don't work.
I end up taking about 40 pics of each cake (cutain half shut/open, door shut/open etc) then break it down on PC till I get the best one.
I must say, I love doing that - could do it all day, but hate taking the pics.0 -
When taking photographs, try a white sheet held up & then either daylight (through a window) or something like an anglepoise lamp *behind* the sheet to illuminate the background.
It helps to get rid of those solid shadows behind the cakes.0
