I sell lots of my cakes through my workplace and often find that the day I bring one in for someone, I get another order or even two that same day. Word is starting to get about but it's taken a number of months for me.

I did a carboot sale in October last year and took a number of cakes with me (including especially made mini cakes). Although this wasn't exactly a roaring success (only sold 2) I gave out loads of business cards to people and have just had my first response to one of them.

How many towels did you use? Im struggling with my first towel cake.
  • Hiya,

I'm not sure if anyone can help, i've just phoned the Job Centre re my maternity allowance & being self-employed. while i'm on MA thay have said that i'm onlyallowed to work 10 days or part days! This includes making & selling! I cant afford not to claim MA as it £123.00 per week and i dont make anywhere near that from cakes. I asked about doing it on a non-profit basis and thats not allowed either! So best idea we have comeup with is that i work 1 day a month and all orders /sales are on this day! Problem is i really dont want to loose the custom i have bult up, i have nicked 2 shelves in my OH's car shop so epople are gonna want to buy things when they see them. We might have to put things through is books on the days i'm not working, and charg VAT on the gifts!!

    Sorry for the rant, GRRRR

That's not good :( And what about working two days per week it would be about 8-10 per month and ppl usually buy cakes for weekends I think so you could do it on the end of the week :) I don't know if it's wright but think is a beeter idea and you'll not loose customers. Maybe you could go one day to the local market and sell it then for example advertise that every week on sat they can see and buy you gifts there.. Maybe you are already doing it I don't know but think it's always some idea.
Hope it helps and good luck

    Thanks,

Its only 10 days in 39 weeks! as soon as i go over that my Maternity stops. Fair enough if it was actual work however i only sell an average of 3-4 cakes a month and a handfull of other bits. and after millage i really dont make much profit!
I have talked it over firther with my OH and we have come to the conclusion that i wil work approx 1 day a month, as i do his paperwork inc VATetc at the shop, and on that day i will make sure that any orders are collected & i will do all my making on that day also. It might work out 1 day every 3 weeks as i will take a couple of months off so will have 10 work days to spread over approx 7 months.

Wow, very impressed. Im using a bath towel, hand towel and flannel and it just seems so small. The towels are pretty thick too. It would be absolutely ideal if i could get it to work... Hmmmm... back to see what i can do.

    Hi Jojo

I make mine and charge according to whatever the customer's budget is.

I never use thin towels though and make sure that the towels I use are really thick and fluffy ones, not the thinner type ones that don't wash very nice.

I wouldn't use anything in my cakes that I wouldn't like to receive myself.

    Hope this helps,

    Sal
