I was reading the Evening Standard the other day and looked at the jobs section. It confirmed something I've suspected for a long time. That a lot of people in tne south don't earn any more than the majority of people in the north.

It seems this notion that London jobs are well paid is a myth. Somehow a person who is an office worker in London thinks their wage is greater than someone doing the same job in Leeds or Manchester when in reality the salaries are often similar and when you take into the cost of living in the capital, the Londoner is actually worse off.

Community Staff Nurse working in schools. I am 29 yrs old and am on £21,176pa but pro rata because I only do 22 and half hours per week. Looking at some of these posts it's not a massive amount of money considering the responsibility I have and the amount of training I have to do.

  • BEST PERK OF MY JOB.......SNOW DAYS!!!

    AGE: 27
JOB: Teacher - Head of Physical Education.
    Wage: 34k
Perks: Very rewarding, about 13 weeks holiday (some, less ambitious teachers arrive at 8.30 and leave at 3.05) pay 3% pension the government 12%. Great banter with colleagues.

Currently on MPS 5, next year M6 then UPS 1. This means ill earn 4k extra in 2 years even without promotions.

Negatives: High stress, endless demands, Ofsted - league tables. - Pay freeze, government doubling our pension contributions. Pupils swearing at you, unsupportive parents, lack of powers etc.

  • Self employed Hairdresser renting chair in a top end city centre salon in Yorkshire. 36yrs old with 5.5 years hairdressing experience.

My 2010 gross income will be around £23-£24k. Started off at less than £10k in 2005 but rose steadily as I built up clientele.
Top self employed stylists with over 12 years experience at the same salon as me earn £35k+.
Employed/Salaried hairdressers at the same salon earn minimum wage plus commission which in practice equates to £12-£15k, but entitled to holiday+sick pay.
Juniors/Assistants earn £95 per week (standard apprenticeship wage).

Pros: Highly rewarding, great job satisfaction, no two days are the same, can't take work home with you, autonomy over own work, creative, meet diverse range of people/clients, can top up money doing home/mobile hairdressing, can work hours to suit and take as many holidays as I like (within reason).

Cons: Can be physically exhausting, no paid holidays, no sick pay, no pension, working Saturdays, long hours if you want to earn a decent income, working late into evenings for after work clients, difficulty maintaining income when moving jobs (especially to a new city where you have to build clientel from scratch and go back to earning the minimum wage), not a sustainable job (physically) up to your retirement age.
