I think its appalling how badly people are paid and I never knew it was so bad until I read this thread.
I'm 38 years old, a chartered accountant and I'm a strategy and business support manager for a financial services company, currently on secondment to Paris and they pay me quite well for the unfettered use of my brain:
Basic salary £90,000 pa
Guaranteed bonus £20,000 pa
Performance bonus £5,000 pa
Shares, varies but this year £15,000 worth
Share options, varies but this year £10,000 worth
Other:
Rent allowance £2,500 per month
Travel allowance for commuting £80 per month
Annual leave 45 days per year
Defined contribution pension scheme, 11% employer contribution0 -
I completly agree. My husband is also a tube driver and yes the money is good and the perks are too, but he spent 8 years having abuse hurled at him and being spat at on the gateline for just doing his job, endured several months of hard training, passed some very rigorous assessments before he qualified. The hours are also very unsociable and incredibly isolating - his friends all go on about how much he earns but when he mentions what time he starts work in the morning or finishes at night sometimes, they all say they don't know how he does it. What I'm trying to say is that there is a reason those jobs are well paid, if it was easy everyone would be doing it. It may look like they get a lot of holiday but when you consider that they work 364 days a year (only closing Christmas Day) most of the leave is actually time back for the unsociable hours they work and missed Bank Holidays. Nor do they get a choice on when they take thier leave, it's fixed for them in advance and if for example you're getting married and need a certain day off to attend your own wedding which doesn't fall in your leave period, you have to find someone else to swap with you!
And one more thing, just for the record, just because the union calls for strikes doesn't mean all tube drivers strike. Just get fed up with people making ill informed judgements about things they know little about. Rant over.
I have to put up with all those things your husband does as a nurse, unsocial hours, bank holidays (and we don't get Christmas day off), angry and aggressive patients and families (and i'm a children's nurse ), late and early starts/finishes/night shifts...and i am paid far less than this  So the pay someone receives is not always a reflectiob of what their work entails.....however on the other hand most people chose the profession/job they go into, and thus should take the rough with the smooth....not that i think anyone should have to put up with aggressive patients/families/customers full stop, but thats another story0 -

but a job is SOOO much more about how much or less someone gets paid. i've got the best job in the world, i get huge job satisfaction from helping others and knowing i'm not making any fat boss even richer.
i can't wait to get to work each day and i never get paid a penny for it nor would i ever accept any money for doing something i love so much. i'm very lucky to be living debt free and a very happy fulfilled life.Martin has asked me to tell you I'm about to cut the cheese, pull my finger.0 -
I agree and no doubt like others on here, I love my job. However, I do not think the family I have to support would be too impressed if I worked for nothing.0
