Management Accountant for a group of NHS GP Practices. £26k per annum plus NHS pension scheme (Ees contribution 6.5%, Ers contributions 14%) 38 days holiday which increases to 41 next year, study leave, flexi-time, and the office is a 10 minute drive away with no traffic.

I also get 6 months full pay, 6 months half pay of sick (and similar mat leave).

I'm a bit bored but it's VERY difficult to motivate myself to move at the moment, so just hanging around while I study my Open University degree.

I seem to be in the middle in my group of friends.

Some are in the public sector with decent looking pensions but lower salaries.

Others find it tough to get any job.

And a few who went into oil & gas... well... after 3 years one has jumped to £53k, plus he gets some major overtime bringing him to ~£65k per year. He's paying off £2.5k to his mortgage every month and will have paid it off in 3 years, by the time he's 32!

Honestly, if I could get into it, I would seriously consider it. The problem being I'd have to start at the bottom again. (I'll top out at maybe £55-65k but he'll go on to earn over £100k per annum). Maybe I should be happy with what I've got!?

    21. Working as a trainee accountant, I earn £13k a year gross. Free Bupa healthcare which is nice, flexi time as long as I do my contracted hours per week and 31 days holiday. I also get my study course paid which costs my employer just over £2,600 a year. Course takes 3 years so I'm happy to take a lower-than-average salary for my area/job and not have to pay my own study costs.

Interesting... I'm a second year trainee accountant (technically an auditor though) on £21.7k at 24 y/o. I guess the difference is I have a degree (I'm guessing you don't, unless you just started work), or I'm further through my training contract.

Less holidays though (23 days I think, plus I get overtime back in lieu) and free simplyhealth health care.

Study costs also covered, which as you say are significant.

(Also coincidentally, I have been nicknamed Kirky Girl in the past too!!)

Left my job as a Team Leader in Manufacturing (£600p/w) to take a paycut as a New Project Quality Engineer (£30k p/a). Difference is that I was working between 60 and 70 hours a week as a Team Leader. I've been working (for the last 6 months) just a basic 39 hours a week with very little weekend work, for a guaranteed basic wage. I've learned at the age of 26 that money doesn't buy your happiness.
  • I am a primary school teacher and earn £34k p/a + some travelling expenses as peripatetic.
  • Trainee Systems architect in the North West - starting salary £18K. That's with absolutely no IT experience.
