30 years old, work as a bookkeeper in an accountants firm (on the job training only, no actual qualifications) earn approx £16k (before tax) work 9-5 Monday to Friday.

Also have a fortnightly weekend job - 6 hours on a sat & 4.5 hours on a Sunday - minimum wage on a sat @£6.31 and £6.50 on a Sunday minus 20% tax = £53.69 every second weekend adds approx £1,400 to my take home pay a month.

Rent privately @ £500 a month (have lived here for 4 years 5 months so have paid £26,500 of my landlords mortgage - makes me feel sick!) but can't get anywhere else to rent that's as good a deal as what I have. No help with any bills or anything, hence working 2 jobs :) it's a good feeling knowing I work to support myself though :)

1400 extra a year? Not month surely.

Why does paying rent make you feel sick? Your paying to live in the house, why do you care about the landlords mortgage?

With respect to those in the oil industry, they get paid big money because of the length of time away from home, the conditions and the risk.

If thats how you want to live then by all means go for it.

Not all - many roles are onshore based and pay handsomely - but I do get your point. However there's a difference between being a field engineer for the likes of Schlumberger (manual back-breaking work) and being a controls engineer, I believe. Correct me if wrong! In any case, if I got the chance, I would definitely give it a shot. :)

1966-1970: various newspaper rounds + party host for a children's play area: about £5,000 per year
1970-1974: full time shop worker. About £6,000 per year
1974 -1975. Researcher for TV Programmes, about £8,500 per year.
1976-1990. Part time Betterware Distributor/ part time mum , First year was about £2000 but each year was going up and up so it was roughly on average£5,000 per year. The best year/last year was about £6500.
    1990 - 2000: Semi-Retired/part time work at supermarket(s). About £9,000 per year
2000-2014: Serveral part time jobs, (supermarket, call centre, customer service) : £20,000 per year.
