with regards to the insurance, not all vets accept direct claims from the insurance, so best to check what their poilcy is.
u wont have to put in a claim every week, u can gather up a few visits up before u claim, and some forms are downloadable from the insurance companies website ( i know petplan is) or ask the company for more than one each time.
u may need to do a indirect claim to start with (as u have already paid) then u maybe able to do direct claims afterwards as ur vets will then know the condition is cover.0 -
Thanks for that Waterfalls. That makes sense. We are with Tesco.Waterfalls wrote: »with regards to the insurance, not all vets accept direct claims from the insurance, so best to check what their poilcy is.

NFU have paid me directly and the vets also. I only have to fill in the basic details (Name, address etc) and then Sarah in the vets fills the rest in for me.
In regards to the glucose levels, he should be getting approx 8-10. The reading you had was alright as you are still adjusting the dosage, so dont worry yourself. For a while Buddy's was reading way over 30!! Ive been testing him and he is between 6-11 now and the vets is very happy with him.
Only problem is that Buddy has been heaving and bringing up just frothy spit the last two evenings. He has done this before and was very unstable on his legs, so i took him to the vets and he was diagnosed with gastro problems and needed anti-biotics. I will see if he is ill tommorow and then book him into the vets in the evening if needed, they are so good at getting me appointments0 -
Poor buddy. I know that when wippie was on antibiotics last year for his eyes he was not eating at all on them and was very lethargic. I actually dread him having to have them again for anything but we did find one that suited him after taking a couple of different ones. I hope buddy goes on OK. We seem to forget that they can get other illness's beside this diabetes and I bet its hard finding an antibiotic whereby they will eat too.buddys_mum wrote: »NFU have paid me directly and the vets also. I know today my lad has been quite hyper TBH running around like a mad dog and very hyperactive. He has not been like that for a while either and he has drank quite a bit too. We upped his dosage to 8 units, twice daily yesterday so maybe that but will definately keep an eye on him.
We have dropped the tesco claims form off at the vets today and they are filling in their side of the form. Just hope they honour the claim now. Our vets said today that we have to pay for the visits and prescriptions as and when and then claim back in batches maybe. Seems so silly to me if we get the claim honoured (( can understand up to yet but if we the claim ongoing then surely it would be better for them to claim!!!). Just need to get him regulated and then these weekly visits can stop for a while i assume and it will just be every couple of months.0 -

I just wish I could wave my magic wand and make him better. I wish I had my time over again with him. I wish he was not having to go through all this stress. I wish I was a better dog owner. Oh how I wish, I am crying now writing this and wishing I could go through this for him. I would give my right arm to go through this for him. He is not your ordinary dog believe me. I feel so scared.
Just finished reading this whole thread and this post especially made me cry
My dog is similar marshallka, very hyper and quite naughty and the vets find him difficult to cope with but we are used to his nuttyness and love him so much. He is such a character and every day he makes us laugh and exasperates us with his antics.
I think you're being a brilliant owner and really brave about the injections and everything. It must have been a frightening time for you. Very best wishes to wippie and to you too.:A
PS
Btw, we've been feeding Burns for the last 8 years and only recently I've started giving him home-made (due to intermittant tummy upsets). Mostly beef, chicken or turkey with brown rice, carrots and green beans etc and he is thriving on it. I thought he loved the Burns, but with the home-cooked food he practically does a fosbury flop onto the worktop to try and get his tongue in the bowl whilst I'm dishing it up! (this is not necessarily to you OP, but anybody else like me who's reading your thread and wondering about home-cooked dog food).Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0 -
Thankyou so much thistledome. Your dog sounds a handful too. I actually prefer a dog with character TBH but its very difficult when they are like they are at the vets who are actually trying to help. We are coping as yet and thanks for posting the recipes you feed your dog. I know I cannot change my dogs diet yet as they have told us to stick to his one we are feeding now but great for others on here.thistledome wrote: »Just finished reading this whole thread and this post especially made me cry

Will be posting updates of how he is going on but as yet he is fine in himself but still not too good according to blood tests. Collies have a way of hiding illness from us though. He just wants to please all the time and being "ill" is not him. Even when he did his eyes last year he greeted us wagging and bouncing with both eyes shut. He must have really been in pain too. He give us so much and we want to give him the best back. He does not even growl really now when having his jabs and actually lifts his head knowing what is coming. He would not be the same with the vet though but with us he is fab.0 -
Sounds like Wippie knows that you are just trying to help him. So glad that you are getting on well giving him his treatment, you will soon get good results back from the vets. Just remember it can take months to stabilize him, it took me 5 months to get Buddy on the right track ( he is fast asleep on the sofa).0

Marshallka,
What a riveting thread, just finished reading from start to finish your collie certainly has been through it compared to my collie glad that you are now getting the hang of the insulin.
Your dog is lucky to have such wonderful owners.
All the best for wippie

Been the vets again tonight and his glucose was up to 18.3. They have done another flutosamine test and get the results of that Monday and then after that they will most probably up the insulin again. Not getting better as yet but I guess it takes time. He is getting sore now from the jabs (although we do alternate the places) and getting a little fretty (which then makes me fretty) too. Tonight he actually swung his head round at me when I grabbed his fur. Just hope its a one off TBH.
Still not heard from Tesco with regards to the claim. May give them a call tomorrow.0 -
\aw\1 \if he is getting stressed ask your vet if a D.A.P. collar might help (I have put one on my lab for fireworks season)My vet nurse said she used one on her dog when his companion died and he was pinning. Apparently it worked well.
It might just help to relax your dog without the use of drugs.
HTH and keep up the good work!Norn Iron Club member 4730
