Just wondering as I want to make my own as we eat loads of the stuff. I know it's being lazy but I don't want to get the food processor out just to make a couple of days worth. The last time it saw the light of day was when I was weaning my DD - 2 and a half years ago!

    Hi Nova,

Yes you can freeze it. Have a look at this thread: Hummous - can you freeze?

Chana dal is split and skinned chick peas - but they do go very mushy when blended - so it might give you a smoother texture. If you find your hummus is a little runny, you can process in a little wholemeal bread to firm it up -a tip from one of Lionel Blue's books

I'm going to try and make it too, one of these days. I love it eaten in the traditional way, on warm pitta bread.

I have bags of dried organic chickpeas because I sprout them for salad greens, and I think I can use some to make houmus.

    Hi Quasar,

Can you explain what the above means? Sounds very interesting, especially if involves growing your own salad :D

  • I like the more grainy texture of the hm version. I only add a teeny bit of garlic and sometimes use lime instead of lemon and add corriander.

Have you got any veggies, like carrots or cucumber? They're nice dipped in houmous. Or, it's nice if you sort of 'blob' it on top of salad as a dressing.

My young lady loves houmous and has always wanted to make her own. So I beat her to it and made her some this afternoon before she got in - we didn't have a shiny new blender until this afternoon (debenhams lots% off - £25 with ice crushing function!)

She says it is miles better than anything she's made, but doesn't have that special something store bought stuff has - she thinks it's because she's used to the cheap stuff and this is better (or different?)

I used a tin of chickpeas for that instant effect (we have dried but obviously no time to reconsitute them for the suprise!), two cloves of garlic - a bit on the elderly side but needed using up, some freshly bought tahini (never heard of the stuff before today) and some olive oil & lemon juice + zest.

I think it tastes very similar to what we had when I was on my biodiesel course at LILI (lowimpact.org) but I'd never had houmous before or since...

Anyway, thanks for all the wonderful threads on making it - I read 'em all before experimenting myself!:T:beer::j
