Or try a health food shop. If there's a choice between light and dark choose light. If there's no choice it'll be light tahini. It's to do with the colour rather than calorie content- dark tahini is made from unhusked sesame seeds and can be a bit bitter.

If you have a local shop that sells things from around the world I'd try there. In Leeds there's a supermarket that sells lots of ingredients for indian, chinese, cypriot, greek, etc, etc cooking and you can get loads of bargains. I used to get my tahini from there where it was less than £1 for a big jar. I imagine other big cities also have similar shops. Shops which sell mediteranian and middle eastern ingredients cheaply will probably be your best bet.
Or try Sainsburys or Holland and Barret.0 -
I've found it in Sainsburys and Tescos in their international section. Not sure what they call that section, but the one which has kosher foods, greek foods, etc. I've never found it difficult to get hold of to be honest once you know where to find it.0

Hi there  We have an older thread on sourcing tahini here (and suggestions to use peanut butter instead
). I'll add this thread to that one later to keep suggetsions together.

I always get my tahini from holan and barrat, you can normaly find a atore in you local shopping centre. There is usually lots of good offers on dried fruit etc there too.

I make tahini from scratch - its just a paste of sesame seeds, oil and a tiny bit of water - essential though is a very fine grinder mixer to make it very smooth.
for hummus, put chickpeas, sesame seeds, lemon juice, oil, bit of water and grind to very smooth. hth.0 -
Decided to try making homemade humus today. Using recipe of chickpeas, chillis, coriander, garlic, lime juice and olive oil. Whizzed in food processor for ages but result is tasteless and sandpaper texture.
Any ideas for rescuing it?0 -
maybe not healthy but a good pich or 2 of salt goes a long way! i also like my hummous a bit more chunky' if the flavour can be improved it might be worth mashing up another tin of chickpeas and some roasted garlic cloves with a fork to improve the texture. i always use tahini (and/or sesame oil) as i love sesame taste
hope that helps
