    Just to add I regularly use hummus weeks after the date, although if you leave it too long it starts to ferment lol

    I have eaten it a few days after sell by date without any ill effects
    There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion

    Its nice with baked potatoes:D - bit of butter then big dollop of hummus...:p. Serve with a bit of green salad dressed with fresh-squeezed lemon juice and a coupla black olives thrown into the green salad and nom..nom..

    Just do not eat it if it starts to ferment, as it will continue fermenting, inside you. It hurts; lots.

    I've just made houmous for tonight and it is more like a spread than a dip. Anyone got any ideas as to what to put in it to loosen it up a bit?

    Blitz it up with more oil, lemon juice or water until you get the consistency you like.

    If you have a couple of spoonfulls left tomorrow, thin it down with chicken stock and chilli to make a soup that really packs a protein punch too.

    you can also thin it with some of the cooking water if you cooked the chick peas yourself, or use some of the liquid from the can

    probably too late for this batch, but worth bearing in mind to save some when you drain the peas next time :)
