i've got vista home premium on my hp laptop - connected wirelessly to my router - netgear dg834g.
Regularly, the laptop loses the internet connection while i'm using it. it seems random. my desktop which is cabled and running XP doesn't lose it and neither does the PS3 which is also wireless.
I've tried assigning a static IP address to my laptop (about 20mins ago) and wondered if that would help.
i've also unchecked the "allow windows to turn adaptor off to save power" option although i doubt that'll make a difference since the connection is lost while i'm using the machine.
any thoughts?
thanks

hi there
this can be a common prob with built-in wifi adaptors on laptops and its usually down the quality of the adaptors.
had a mac and an acer doing the same in a small office, the mac stayed on while the acer kept dropping, mac wifi adaptor obviously better quality
check ebuyer for the linksys by cisco adaptors for around £12 - u wont be disappointed. or borrow an adaptor and test
also download netstumbler to check the signal strength from the laptop

thanks stuart....according to the adaptor, the signal strength is "very good" - i'm at the front of the house online and the router at the rear - internal walls are stud partition.
the wi-fi adaptor is built in and i presume, not easy to change. i'd also rather not have a card sticking out the side of the laptop whenever i'm on line.
anything else i can have a look at?
cheers

Hi Tobybowes,
No, I don't think I closed down the program (Word/Excel) but I don't need to do this on the laptop and haven't had to do that in the past on the troublesome desktop. I will give it a try though when I'm next at the PC to see if this works.
Hi Stuart
I don't know the exact size of the file but it was only say 5-10 pages of ordinary text, no graphics and nothing fancy. I also tried saving just a few words in a doc and sending and it wouldn't send that either so I don't think it is size-related.
Many thanks.0 -
Quick question, have old pc(Tiny bought 2001) with photos galore stored in it. Have upgraded to new laptop, but been trying to copy photos onto memory stick and transfer, to no avail. Old pc used kodak to view photographs if thats any clue and can I get some sort of networking cable for faster data transfer?
yours hopefully0
