Even better if you don't book package, flights, hotel (most offer half board) and transfers are all pretty easy to do yourself! Probably my best holiday (last summer)

Its not the holidays itself that I've found have gone expensive, its the flights. Last year I could find flights from Manchester to Salou mega cheap, now the cheapest is £935 in October unless I want to have a night over in Frankfurt or fly from other airports, last year the same flights were £240 for the 4 of us. The accommodation itself is cheap.

I don't see a holiday in Britain as being a very cheap alternative, though. People expect to pay nothing for holiday homes and even camping, you have to do some research or the costs are high, especially if you need to buy new equipment.

That depends which hotel you stay at.

And there definately arent gangs of drunken British lager louts tearing the place up.

There are far more British undesirables in Florida than Spain.

Have you considered Liverpool to Salou ?

Thats what we did last summer and we usually go from Manchester.

Is your 11yo into culture & history, or more beachy, sporty stuff? If the former then why not look at Egypt Nile Cruise? Exchange rate is not too bad GBP vs EGP, so they are still a reasonable price and you won't get any 'lager louts' (although a few people may have more G&T's than is good for them at the 'party nite' - but suggest that you join them as it is good fun!).
I'm also told the AI hotel resorts in Egypt are good, but not done them so can't speak from personal experience.

We 'did' lots of Greece, Spain & France in the past, but the GBP vs Euro makes that an expensive option at the mo'.

Mexico is more likely to be full of American 'lager louts' from my experience - as loud as the British ones but on less alcohol! - They are not too bad when you get used to them, and very friendly to English people. Stunning ancient sites to visit and lots of local culture.

Don Rep we reckon has got a bit too 'touristy' nowadays, but we first went years ago and preferred it then. Lots of Canadians (ditto above comment re Americans, but Canadians). Still nice beaches though, but not too many 'places of interest' to visit.

Cuba is still a great place to go, prob our fave. Lots to see, wonderful people, good value for money. Go before the Americans relax too many of their sanctions and the place gets 'Americanised'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS - I totally agree that UK places have upped their prices ridiculously to take advantage of people staying at home - even campsites, many of which gone up more than 30%, with no extra facilities being offered.....
