As you say, Eh up Jack :j

How's you? long time no chat :D

Could I not get it any cheaper than £50:00? I'm just so fed up of vista, I'm much more comfortable with XP
I agree with the poster above who expressed surprise that anyone has sold you a machine with Vista on it and only 512Mb of RAM. I note that you say you have increased it to 1Gb but to be honest that is still very very low.
Can you double it to 2Gb as RAM is quite cheap at the mo?
The problem is Vista takes up a lot of your RAM and so if you don't have much it will struggle. XP uses less.
I understand that the next operating system (already mentioned above) ie Windows 7 has a lower level of RAM that it uses.
If you could manage to hang on I think it would be good to wait for Windows 7 and then you will see a difference but I still would be looking to increase to AT LEAST 2 Gb of RAM.
Anyway there are, I'm sure others better able to explain but just tried to put it into simpler terms for you as you said you were not technically minded.:D

    Hello floss

OK, I think I'll update the RAM and wait for W7 to become available, from your computer knowledge, will it be easy to install W7, say compared to XP onto the laptop?

    I'm good matey, ta :)

Unfortunately that is about the cheapest you'll get it, and even then you may have to buy some hardware with it to comply with lisencing issues :(

however, upgrading the RAM on the lappys IS an excellent idea and will speed up your vista installs...as has been noted, vista really needs 2 GB to work proper, like ;)

..and not only that, if you then go for W7 when it's available, you should be tootling along very nicely :)

BTW, upgrading the OS probably only involves popping in a CD/DVD and letting the new/updated files to be installed, so no disruption of your data, pics, music, other progs, etc and should have generic device drivers included for your hardware to keep working...

  • Just one downside to upgrading to Windows 7 is that it will be more expensive i.e. c£100 rather than c£50 for XP!

Have you seen anything to substantiate this ?? Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling you a liar, but there was supposed to be a cheap upgrade path from vista to W7 that microsoft were going to do in recognition that most people hated vista and wanted rid...just wondered if you'd seen more up-to-date info than me

With all the help there is on here I'm sure you will be fine.;)
By the way, I ALSO heard that MS were intending a low cost to upgrade from Vista to W7- time will tell.
    Good luck.

Just so the OP knows he's not alone -
Time Magazine listed the 10 Biggest Tech Failures of the Last Decade.
Guess what came in at number 1?

The offers available to Vista users will be:

    1) If you buy a Windows Vista based PC from July onwards, you will qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 7 if your OEM is enrolled in the scheme

    or

    2) You buy the Upgrade version of whichever edition of Windows 7 you want, the same is available to every other Windows user.

So...if your vista pc is pre-July 2009, you will need to buy a W7 Update version, yes ?? And what sort of prices are being toted for that ?? Also, if you are on XP, will the W7 upgrade path apply as well, or will you be looking at a retail copy & prices ??

    hi there

    google cpu-z

its a freeware prog that identifies your motherboard, cpu and RAM type

identify your RAM type and how many slots you have free by clicking the spd tab

say u have 2 memory slots with 256 mb in each slot, remove these and get 2 1 gb sticks

viola a much faster system especially when RAM today is buttons

if u need help just ask
