Vista to XP

OP, how long have you had your two machines that run Vista? Reason I ask is computers always slow down over time as they get used and get more and more stuff on them. A clean install of Vista might fix the problem.
Also what spec are the machines running Vista?
Do you have all of the latest updates installed onto the Vista machines?
What AV are you running?
Have you defragged recently?
How much do you have installed on the machine?
What programmes do you have running on startup?
When I got my PC I got a free upgrade to Vista a few months later. Never installed it for a year. When I got round to it I asked on a forum "should I stick with XP or go to Vista?" It was a 50/50 split for each option.... most of the people saying "don't touch Vista" had never even used it. Well I went for it and now my PC is much quicker with Vista than it was with XP. I would never go back to XP.
Its all to easy to blame Vista itself....0 -

I'm off the beliefe, if it's not broke don't touch it, I just don't have the confidence when it comes to computers, and doubt I ever will.

If your not technical minded, ignore ALL the posts telling you to install Windows 7. It's not finished, not totally reliable and I sure you don't want to be bothered with the computer shutting down every 2 hours from next March. It's only a test version.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Thanks 10past6...
The description of the first PC didn't really tell me much, but the second one sounds way underpowered for Vista IMHO.
TBH i'm surprised they even sold you a machine with 512ram, 1.8 GHz Celleron and with Vista....
For that reason and as post 14 says, if you aren't comfortable with PC's and software massively... steer well clear of Windows 7.
I thinl your only option is to buy XP and ask someone (a friend?) to install it for you.

If so, given my nil computer knowledge is there more to it than just inserting the disc?

Ey up 10past...
unfortunately a genuine copy of XP is likely to set you back at least £50-odd quid, and you'll need one for each lappy. Might be better to wait a while, as there is talk of a cheap upgrade path from vista to Windows 7 when it is released (the current downloadable one is a trial version only - as explained earlier, W7 is the next Op Sys from microsoft to be released "properly" within the next year or so)......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

I think the cheap upgrade to the next windows i.e. 7 will only start in July or August. I'm waiting until then before buying a computer!
Is Vista that bad that you want to downgrade to XP? I have XP and and it's ok for me so no reason to upgrade. Maybe it would be better to wait until Windows 7 is officially released, and then upgrade? I have tried out the trial release and have been impressed so far.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
In have upgraded the RAM to 1GB, but nothing else, the specs mean nothing to me I'm afraid, oh yeh, I purchased it from ebuyer (another lesson learned, but then again PC world / Comet confused me when trying to sell me a machine)
Is it just a question of buying an XP disc?
If so, given my nil computer knowledge is there more to it than just inserting the disc?

With downgrade, you'll have to wipe and start again to get XP. (Much easier when it's an upgrade - when Microsoft released Vista, they didn't expect so many people to want to go back to XP!)Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

How's you? long time no chat
Could I not get it any cheaper than £50:00?
