Thanks for the advice.
Ell's bells bowling, no-one was stalking, if you'd read what many of us said (like, er, mine at #126) this thread wouldn't have hit the 200 mark with your graceful retirement at #199.
Posters have gotten exasperated not so much with you as with the fact that urban myths really are corrosive: they can upset the gullible, they can waste a lot of people's time, and they can lower people's alarm threshold to such a point that a danger arises of genuine warnings being discounted because of all the daft dross that preceded 'em.
That's why urban myths should be (a) laughed at and then (b) shut down.
As to some posters on here being Rottweilers, what rubbish. Another UM, methinks.0 -
Oh for goodness sake OP
If you go into a ladies loo anywhere there WILL NOT be hooks OUTSIDE the cubicles because NO-ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would leave a bag unattended.
And you're lucky if there's a hook inside the loo
they drum it into us DO NOT LEAVE BAGS UNATTENDED. They also tell us if you put your bag on the floor it will be nicked while you're on the loo. well I never met anyone who said that happened to them either and I am no spring chicken.
I do know someone who had a purse snatched out of her bag (at a supermarket). I once found a 'concealed' purse which I handed in which turned out to have been snatched in Marks and Spencers...
you don't know the person it happened to. A relative of yours claims to.
it's an old trick - and why was the theft not reported to the police?
I had a bag nicked.
From inside my HOUSE because I hadn't locked a door and a sneak thief (or opportunist) came by, opened the door - winter, so dark at 7, saw my bag and snatched it.
First call - the police.
The major slagging off from my OH because of the inconvenience will stay with me forever.
Locks changed (for housekeys were in bag) that night through insurance.
If you go back to your source and track the story through it will become more convoluted.
However your basic message
If you have your bag stolen and get a call asking you to go and collect it DON'T go is valid. -
but think about it. Bag left on hook in toilet area. Bag owner 'uses facilities; comes out of facilities bag is gone. Bag owner asks - no-one knows about bag. Bag owner/store assume bag stolen - then store mysteriously find bag with, presumably sufficient contents to identify and contact owner?
Or get someone else to 'mind' your house while you do - but anyone having keys stolen and not changing locks is asking for it.
And while you're at it don't let anyone dispose of petrol soaked rags down the loo because GUESS what will happen to you when, as you are well hacked off with this thread and life in general, you decide to have a good 'rest' and smoke a fag at the same time; remembering, of course, to drop your lit match into the loo to both put it out and get rid of it because when the paramedics come and pick you up and hear the story of how you singed your bum they will laugh so hard and so long that they drop you down the flight of stairs and you break your legs.
Don't say you haven't been warned. It's happened before and could well happen again.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

yes but even so if you leave a bag unattended (or, these days, a drink in a bar) you are asking for trouble.
