The same sort of scam happened to a collegue of my boyfriend just before christmas. Except her handbag was in the changing room and they grabbed her bag when she went out of the cubicle to show her boyfriend her outfit and ask his advice. She got a phonecall the next day saying John Lewis, was told to come along and ask for Mr X, went along, told there wasnt a handbag there or anyone there by that name, got home and all her xmas presents (wrapped under her tree, ready to give out) and her tv etc were all gone. I can promise this was 100% true!

Now I give my bag to OH/sister etc when im in a cubicle or dont leave when Im trying it on and just shout on the person im with to come and look.

    xx

I still don't understand why she had not changed the locks to her house. If my bag was stolen it would be the first thing I would do - and I would make damn sure someone was at home with the deadlock on at all times until the locks had been changed.

Still smells very fishy to me.

It's been a great thread though!

That talk of Coronation Street has just reminded me that One Foot In The Grave had a variation of this "scam" as one of its story-lines. In that case, Victor and Margaret were given free West-End theatre tickets and while they were at the theatre their house was completely ransacked.

Was it Morse or Frost that had that story line as well? I remember the scene but just can't remember which police series it was.

Mind you a lot of TV drama is where these urban myths originate anyway and they just keep recycling the stories.

I think I have figured out why John Lewis stores are being targeted. The thieves are using a stolen sat-nav which has all the JL stores programmed into it. This is why they can easily travel from Edinburgh to Blue Water.

Well it must be true! The UK Independence Party featured both this "warning" and the parcel delivery "scam" on its website back in December. Idiots.

Also, on another website I found this very nasty comment about this so-called handbag theft :-

thats what happens when you open up the country to everybody/anybody who wants to come here especially the poorer countries

organised crime and easy pickings in uk

So it's all the fault of the immigrants!
