The Sony VAIO X505VP did the same in 2004
Now, back to the present discussion: the Acer Timeline 4810T.
I like it.0 -
I might even buy it from a store too cos I know I can out run those unfit sweaty slightly over weight turtle neck wearing macheads waiting to rubgy tackle me at the door.:rotfl:

Wow what a tirade. Macbook Air aren't very well thought out are they, sure made of aluminium and thin good to look at but not much else. Out of all apples products these are the epitome of a gimmick, and really are only fit for one thing trying to look cool in starbucks. Style over function.
I was in PC world the other day, looking at acers and samsungs out of the three I'd say apple came last due to them not being able to do as much for twice the price.
When it comes down to it, yes, the MacBook air is a luxury item. It's basically a luxury netbook. Some people are into that sort of thing, and some people aren't.
If I wanted a compromise between portability and power, I would buy a MacBook. If I wanted something £200 cheaper (£719 - less with your discount), I would get a white MacBook.I might even buy it from a store too cos I know I can out run those unfit sweaty slightly over weight turtle neck wearing macheads waiting to rubgy tackle me at the door.:rotfl:

I'd save up; I wouldn't buy a computer for £350. I wouldn't buy a TV for that price either, or countless other things.0 -
I just found a white MacBook for £689. That's certainly cheaper than the equivalent Timeline, but not by much. To its credit, the Mac has an optical drive and a smaller screen, but it simply doesn't have the stamina of the 4810T and its siblings.
Pity, that.0 -
Asininity can get a discount with Apple through his employer. If it's anything like the education discount, he could get a white MacBook for around the £600 mark. They also give you a 3 year warranty when you use the education discount; I don't know if his employer's works the same way.
I'm not trying to talk him into buying a MacBook; he knows they're out there if he's interested in one. I'm just pointing out that the MacBook Air isn't the only small and light laptop Apple sell.0 -

My discount is 6% I believe but dont quote me on that. If I was going to get a Macbook it'd be one of the aluminium ones, I actually dont think the white ones look that good and lets face it I would only be getting a mac because of its looks. Notice I am talking about me not everyone. I wouldn't class it luxury not by a long shot, MacBooks are luxury items the Air a gimmick.
My main issue with the Air is the same issue that even diehard mac fans have. It doesn't justify the price. It has one usb port, no dvd drive, a mini video output that needs an adaptor (which doesn't come with the air), no ethernet port, no firewire so you cant even get you're photos onto it easily which makes iLife pointless. It weigh in at an impressive 1.34kg but to make it funtional you'd need to carry around a vga/dvi adaptor, dvd drive, usb hub etc.I think you could safely say that would weigh more than the timeline by then. Besides which you need the power brick/cable to0 whereas you wouldn't need it with the timeline. Being able to put it in an A4 envolope is not a feature I need.:D Whos ever needed that?
No I probably shouldn't have mentioned the Air but I honestly do think the timeline beats it, I'd rather have functionality over looks any day, the timeline dont look that bad and for the price you can't argue. When I'm in the market for something new number one is "price" closely followed by "what can it actually do for that price!" distant third "looks". In the case of the air looks cant justify the price of lack of functionality.0 -
It would appeal to me only if (a) I had money to burn, and (b) I wanted a laptop. I'm not really too into laptops myself; I find them uncomfortable to use and would much rather have a desktop. If I ever got a laptop, I would only use it for browsing and checking emails. It wouldn't be a desktop replacement, and I don't think the Air is intended to be. It's just a really light and thin computer, for people who want a light and thin computer. Even Dell can't make a computer like that without charging a premium for it (and they charge more of a premium than Apple do). You do get a 64 bit OS with a Mac though (and the full version of it), which you probably won't get with the Acer, as well as a whole bunch of other stuff. Whether that's important is for you to decide.
Most cameras have a USB port, so while it would be nice if it had a FireWire port, I don't think getting photos onto it would be a problem. I wouldn't be carrying around a load of peripherals with it, so I wouldn't need to carry a USB hub around with me. Its power adapter is basically a big plug, so that wouldn't be too much of an issue. Like I said before, it wouldn't be a desktop replacement for me, so I wouldn't use it in that way. If you're looking for something like that, I can see why you wouldn't consider the MacBook Air.
I still maintain it's the best looking computer ever; it's a total object of technolust. It's not for people who want to run really demanding applications, and it's not supposed to be for people who want to run really demanding applicatios. I mean, you can get a 15 inch MacBook Pro for less than £100 more than a MacBook Air, and it's a much better spec'd machine with a faster processor, faster RAM (and twice as much of it), a bigger HDD, a larger screen with a higher resolution, a DVD writer, a gigabit ethernet port, a FireWire 800 port, an extra USB port, longer battery life, a multi-touch glass trackpad, and it has two graphic cards (one integrated and one dedicated - it'll switch between them depending on what you're doing). Clearly, Apple aren't expecting everyone who wants a laptop to run out and buy a MacBook Air.
Anyhow, here's the MacBook Air ad, and here's a funny ad based on it.0 -
Unfortunately I need a little more than the air can offer, whilst still being thin and the 8-10hr bat life is a killer. Its not meant to be a desktop replacement otherwise I'd most probably go for the acer 8935G. For me a laptop has to be portable and small, I love my lenovo netbook but need a bigger screen and a slightly bigger keyboard and the timeline does have some very good reviews. The OS aint a bother for me I'll be putting a full 64bit linux on there. If I could be bothered fighting to get a refund on the generic windows installation I would. Oh and acer do a 3 year warranty on newly bought laptops for £60, can't argue with that.
I'll let you know if I get it and how it is.0
