  • I can' believe the problems created on here by a 5 quid bunch of roses! I made 3 people very happy with £5 roses, and your point is??? I also purchased a pink perfection boquet from tesco.com with free champers so added a box of chocolates, to be delivered today, Mam phoned me in tears (of joy!!!) to say thank-you. She is used to getting flowers I buy them for her every week, so she got a £5 bunch of flowers as well as her usual Mother's Day gifts, isn't she worth it. I don't think I put anyone out of business, I would normally get her flowers from Tesco anyway. Did anyone complain when Safeway did BOGOF on flowers every Mother's Day? I say give Mr T a break, after all he does have a brilliant r&r policy which I'm sure not many turn down!

Should have added Mam ( and daughter & friend) got a handmade cards too, so some thought did go into Mother's day!

i do agree with that, as a gift i want to feel some effort has gone into it.
i had the BEST flowers today, paper ones my son made at school.

I had some of those as well and there priceless my son and daughter wouldn't let me in there room last night while they made them for me :j :j :j :D

  • I hope all the mums who received them and all the people who bought them realise they were this cheap because of some other mothers, dads and childrens sweated labour. Tesco should be ashamed of themselves.

I thought that everyone on this site liked a bargain and unfortunately its a fact of life that these things happen. Thats how the majority of stores keep their prices down.

the whole point of tescos doing them for a fiver is that it is so CHILDREN can afford to buy them for their mums, us adults can afford to go to a florist, but my daughter who is 4 used HER pocket money because SHE wanted to buy them, she couldn't have afforded a huge bouquet elsewhere. I think it's about time they reduced the flowers to be more affordable instead of hiking the prices up on special occasions like what has happened in the past. Normally, the prices increase because they know that ppl will want/need to buy them, I don't recall anyone slating tescos for selling a dvd player for under £20 when in a small business owned by an individual (and yes, there are still some out there), they are more than double the price. I thought this site was about saving money, perhaps we should have tried to find the most expensive bouquet and direct everyone there instead. me, puzzled - yep!!
  • I feel for people like dazco, who's wife is a florist tescos and other FOOD stores do put companys out of buisness as they will currys etc by selling electrical goods, you don't see them selling baked beans and other food produce, and im sure tescos would soon object if they did, they have planing permision to sell food and should not be allowed to sell anything but ,if this continues you will find mot retailers will go bust enableing stores like tescos to charge what they like then perhaps the bargains WILL be gone forever and a lot of people will be out of jobs ,its nice to get a bargain but without the cost of peoples jobs IE florists, etc

Florists do not hike prices during special occassions. The flowers are bought by wholesalers at auction. Obviously the more demand the more the price goes up. Therefore the more the florist has to pay. My missus puts the same mark up on and makes the same profit. She will sell more flowers but also loses out a lot more with any she has left.

And the point I am making about Tesco is quite simple, they will not be happy until every small business has shut down. Sure you will save a few quid now buying shabby quality loss leaders but what happens when you need a real florist to put together a personalised bouquet or make a wedding special? What about when you need an unusual cd and all your local record shops are gone? Special bottle of wine? Nice box of chocolates?

So to surmise, Tesco care not a jot about its customers and spent a LOT of money to purposely hurt florists during their busiest time.

I heard many people saying to children you don't have enough money for them  so the £5 bunch is great for kids, it's just a shame they didn't have enough to go around  .

I'm not sure if we aren't getting too side tracked here.

I bought some of the flowers from Tesco, happy with the quality, accept there are far better at my local ( superb) florist but perfectly acceptable for the day.

You could take this argument to the enth degree, where do you buy your meat, veg, clothes. Supermarkets play a major part in society, not necessarily a good one but a convenient one.

I bought a Mardale coat because they are local, go to Ruth Kirkham's for my cheese, Reg Johnson's for my poultry but I also go to Tesco or Sasinsbury's for my normal shop.

I agree. I am not slating anyone for buying flowers at tesco ( if you must ) but I am slating tesco big time. This was a calculated and cynical exercise that must have cost them a lot of money, and was simply designed to harm local florists.
