Bank Account Disaster! Please Help.

Hi
I was made bankrupt in march.
As we have an extremely limited Citizens advice Bureau service in Leicester, I followed Their advice and used Leicester Money Advice to help me with my bankruptcy. After doing what they asked I had a new Halifax (Yes I know now) account set up for my benefits etc and applied for bankruptcy.
Soon after, the Halifax account was frozen and closed and I had to contact the OR inorder to get my benefits out, Which I did.
I an now trying to set up a new account. Barclays have refused me an account. Co-op are one of my creeitors so i understand they won't take me.
Are there any other places I can get an account?
This situation is causing me more problems than before my bankruptcy. I am having to pay more for all my services, eg gas electric and about 50% more for my virgin media account as I cannot pay it by cash (which for some reason they don't allow). And on top of that I cannot get my Housing benefit as it comes as a cheque, so I have 2 months of that sitting around.
I hope someone may be able to help.
Matt

You can open a post office account for your benefits.
If Barclays have refused you, you have the option to appeal. plenty of members have had them refused, appealed then gone on to get an account.
even if co-op are a creditor it is still worth a try.0 -
and the last resort think banking if anythig else fails !BSC number 1830

Thanks nervousmother,
How do I get one of these accounts? I asked at my local post office and they told me that there was no account that I could get!
Fatou, could you explain.
Thanks

You can get an account just for your benefits to go into at the post office. You just can't have your salary, etc paid into it.Get free advice before embarking on bankruptcy: CCCS 0800 138 1111 National Debtline 0808 808 4000

Your local post office sounds as though they need training, the basic post office accounts are open to everyone altough you can only get benefits paid in and nothing else, you then withdraw the cash via a card, cant set up standing orders with these.
look up think banking on the internet, i think they charge you somewhere in the region of £12 a month but you do get a card that can be used anywhere.
I would appeal the barclays decision first and also try for a co op cashminder account before going to think banking,.0 -
Thanks Merry Gently but that would be no good for me. I get my incapacity benefit by giro, but I won't be able to pay my housing benefit into that account, Its states that, so not really any good.
I guess I am up a curtain street.

Sorry Matt
Definitely appeal the Barclays decision before going to Think as they do seem rather expensive.

Hi WhippetMan,
Do you have a Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society near you?
They will accept undischarged BRs and although you only get a pass book (no cash card of any kind) you can pay cheques in, you can also get BACS payments sent to this account. The only other down side is you can't set up standing orders to come out of this account.
Does this sound as though it might serve your purpose?

but before you go to think banking, it is a bit expensive but helpful when you cannot get any bank account and use it as a last resort only .
do what he other poster told you appeal to barclays and tried as well cheltenham as it seem the previous poster had manage to get one !
i am a with barcalys ihad no problem to open it but i dont have a debit card yet only a cashcard to withdraw money from ATM which suit me at the moment .BSC number 1830
