Combating materialism in children!

When I was a child my parents didn't have a lot of money and when all my friends were going to Disneyland and the likes, we would go away in a caravan to the Dales, Lake District or Wales.
I do remember feeling envious when we all got back from our summer holidays finding out where everybody had been.
However, my parents made our holidays the most educational, fun and delightful trips. My father would prep himself on the local history, wildlife, craft making etc before we went and would spend hours telling us stories, helping us identify particular flowers from books, looking up historical sites etc.
Whilst I enjoyed it at the time, I never really appreciated it until I hit my 30's and now I look back and realise what a rich and varied childhood I had.
As a parent I know now how easy it is to buy a child something, it takes an awful lot more time, care and love to actually plan to do something with them.0
