if we all start taking our own bags, could/should we be getting a discount?

My local Asda has a carrier bag recycling bin overflowing with carrier bags. I asked if I could help myself to some bags from there and was told certainly not. So not sure where they go or what they are used for but surely if they let other customers use them it would be recycling?

None of this is to help the planet - Tescos have spotted another way to enhance profits on the name of eco - just like half the stuff with eco in the name is.

I thought it was just me that the Tesco carrier bag fiasco was happening to. First I went to the cigarette kiosk where there was just one person serving. Another person was serving at Customer Services but also serving those buying lottery tickets/ciggies/etc. I got served by the person at C.S. and was told I couldn't have a bag as C.S. don't have any. All she had to do was walk 4 steps to her left and get some bags from under the cigarette counter.

Then I watch this miserly old dear handing me one bag at a time. Several times I had to ask for another bag. It wasn't rocket science. My shopping was not going to fit into one bag. And another thing (I feel like a rant, lol) why do they never ask if you want help packing, they rush the stuff through the conveyor belt and tell you how much to pay while you are still packing? They sit there with their arms folded and it doesn't occur to them to pack some stuff while the next customer is looking impatient. So I just take my sweet a$$ time packing now and pay the cashier once I have packed everything.

To be fair (and I was astonished), went to Tesco tonight, same scenario with the bags, but no big deal as I had my BFL, but there was a young lad stood at the end of the till asking if I needed help packing ;)

What an amazing thread, I cant believe so many people get so wound up about such a trivial issue as provision of shopping bags, unbelievable!
Aha, so thats how you do a signature!

As has been said many times in this thread, if you read it, you will see that the Ops issue ISN'T about carrier bags, it is about LYING staff, which I wouldn't class as trivial. The OP has a legitimate reason to be wound up about it.

You are talking about the Ops issue, I mentioned the thread, threads often become far more than the original issue posted as has this one, and I could have sworn that, when reading this thread, there were numerous posts that were simply about lack of provision of free carrier bags

OP, the exact same thing happened to me last week. Shopping in my local Tesco (Stockport) which, admittedly I don't do often as I find it expensive, allI needed was an A4 ream of paper and a few other grocery bits that we had run out of... Got to till, no carrier bags! As I hadn't planned to do my shopping, I hadn't taken my bags for life out with me, it was just a case of we were close by and I figured it saved a trip to Asda later in the day! Ended up buying 2 bags for life that are now sat in the cupboard gathering dust as I much prefer my canvas Asda ones....
