    Hi Nickynoo

To answer your first question, yes, more or less. It will all depend on your local stores though.

And yes, it can sometimes be a lot of hassle (and potential embarrassment) if you stick to your guns but as you've noticed it can be worth it. The thing is just to persevere. Tescos are constantly changing their policy in-store. Mine have now decided they're just accepting pre-printed vouchers and not the internet ones. Safeway don't even know what their policy is because their store managers aren't told by their customer services' headquarters and these managers don't pass the info onto their staff.

Your best bet is just to try out your local stores to see what they will and won't take. Perhaps even write to tesco and safeway's main customer services and get a written response from them that you can print out and show to staff when you shop.

Be warned though- don't try it if you or anyone with you is easily embarrassed. On the good side, this can be money-saving in itself. My husband now refuses to come supermarket shopping with me ;D

Happy New Year to you too,

    Andrea :)
  • Thanks Andrea,

Think I'll go when it's really quiet, pick the young lads on the till (or someone who looks nervous) and start of small. Handing over just a few at first and then build up as I get bolder. Shame I've just done a big shop before christmas as I can't wait to try. Sounds like it could be fun.

Don't be nervous - after all, you are the customer!
After reading the posts on this site, I handed a whole load of vouchers (mostly internet ones) to the cashier and said "will you take any of these?"
She said "we're only allowed to take 10% of your total spend" and handed me the rest back.
This was fine and I have now done it three times in two different Tesco stores.
Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. :D:D

  • WOW - thank you to everybody who have sent best wishes to my Finacee and I - I am totally bowled over by such genuine warmth.

I know this is not a forum to air non money saving comments but I am just online a while a get the chance and wanted to wish everybody a Happy New Year.

Unfortunately the love of my life is still somewhat ill but just to lighten things up a bit I thought I would recount a comical encounter on the coupon front in Tescos.

I had finally left the hospital at about midnight and gone to my workplace to get my gear ready for Saturday mornings 6am start. Still had to get the weekly shopping so arrived at Tesco at 1am.

Got to the till about 1.45am (am somewhat tired by now and have got to get up for work in 4 hours AND I am still in Tesco!)

Anyway handed over some vouchers and quite a prudent amount at that and was told that none would be accepted. I responded polite but annoyed that how comes they accepted them all before for the last few weeks and why do I have an email from her head office saying Tesco policy is to accepted coupons up to the full value of the bill.

Supervisor called and said the reason they were not taking them was because they wouldn’t scan to which I replied they have all other weeks and that the cashier hadn’t even tried to scan them tonight. Supervisor made a big thing of then scanning some and handed the rest back. I again challenged her with the same comments I had made to the cashier to which she said she would get the manager.

Whilst waiting the bloke next in the queue was probably Victor Meldrews brother and was huffing and puffing like a good en. Knowing the manager was on her way and knowing I could simply use the coupons another day I said to cashier to cash up and I would pay the balance by credit card. Obviously though some staff are trained NOT to listen to customers and kept talking about reversing out those vouchers already scanned and by now I was getting somewhat irritated by what should have been a simple transaction.

Eventually paid remainder of bill then stood quietly to one side awaiting the manageress. When she arrived she gave the same narrative I had heard from casher and supervisor about only taking coupons for items I had bought and that unless the item had been bought then the scanner will not recognise the coupon and so cannot be processed.. I promptly gave her my receipt listing the coupons the supervisor had scanned and told her that I had not bought any of the items so what she was saying was rubbish (though not quite so bluntly). Then proceeded to tell her as well about tesco email on the company policy. She then took the remainder of my coupons and my receipt and said  she would clarify.

Now the next bit really naffed me off and when the more important things in my life are a little better I will be registering a complaint because 15 minutes I waited only for the supervisor NOT the manageress to return and hand me back the coupons and receipt with nothing more. No answer or anything. The supervisor said she was told to simply hand the coupons back to me get rid of me.

If I wasn’t having to get some sleep before work then I would have stayed and caused a right scene, bearing in mind I had far greater worries in my head.

Anyway I don’t know what the moral of the story is because a few days later I popped for some more groceries went to a different cashier and he processed all coupons without a blink of the eye. Almost a pity because I had the email with me that time and had plenty of cards (or should I say coupons) up my sleeve ready for a right royal battle. Alas, I shall have to keep my verbal onslaught for another occasion ;)

I have to say it wouldn’t bother me if the policy was just to take a certain amount in coupons or all the bill or whatever. The fact is a policy is supposedly in place and quite why a large blue chip company like Tesco cannot communicate this to its stores is quite beyond belief. It is almost like getting to the checkout and when they process your shopping they decide to change half the prices on the goods you have bought or they won’t serve you today because you are wearing a jumper the cashier doesn’t like. ;)

Looking back it really was a rather comical situation. Can't wait to recount it to my finacee when she is better. She will see the funny side.

Once again a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL ;D

    LM :)

ps just seen that Wishvalue has £2 worth of new coupons folks.

pps I love this Tesco thread - reckon it is my favourite at the moment. How sad, eh, that coupons gets me all excited ;D In fact I even have my mates at work looking out for coupons for me :-[ I am sure as a bloke I could find a better pastime ;) although my defence is that for all the money we save I can spend more on you know who, thus making me look more  8) in her eyes ;D
  • Hi LM, glad you are in good spirits!

I did some shopping at Tesco's last night, and tried using the coupon's from their xmas magazine that run out on 31/12/03.

Cashier wouldn't let me use them cos I hadn't bought the actual products, and they were Tesco's coupons.

If they had been sainsbury's/safeways coupons they would have taken them up to 15% of the bill, even if I hadn't bought the products!

Go figure, as they say in the USA!

Couldn't be bothered argueing as long queue behind and I was knackered, etc.

    Danny.

    Hi LM

That must have been the last thing you needed. ::)

If its any help, 2 cashiers at one of the Tescos I go to said the other day they've had to sign something that was sent round telling the staff not to accept internet vouchers - they wouldn't take any. That was a week after I had 5 vouchers accepted at the same store. ::)

I've since been to a different Tesco and they're still accepting pre-printed vouchers up to 10% but the internet ones won't go through the till.

Thanks for the Wishvalue tip. Hugs to your other half.

    Andrea :)

    Dear voucher saving experts,

I have collected £1.20 worth of vouchers all for widely available products I have no intention of buying.

Unfortunately I do not have a Tesco's near me but I do have Safeway's, Sainsbury's and Waitrose near.

Will all supermarkets accept vouchers even though you aren't buying the products they are intended for?

Sorry if this has been covered before.

    Thanks

    Hi

Safeway and Waitrose should take them. I've not tried vouchers/ coupons in Sainsburys because i don't shop there that often. I'd just give it a go if I were you. If you're really desperate to use the vouchers (as desperate as us anyway ;) ;D ) you could email their customer service departments so you'll have a reply to print out and take with you when you're shopping.

If you do email Safeway's customer service department tell them you have been told by friends that they accept vouchers and you'd like them to confirm this.

    Thanks Andrea,

I emailed Waitrose and they said I can use 6 vouchers per shop and it didn't matter if they were not for the products intended.

I still await a response from Sainsburys.

I'm off to hunt for vouchers ::)
