Update 24 March: We've just rung Tesco to double check the price as some people further down this discussion have said the price has gone up. That is a different player entirely. The price of the Tesco Value DVD player has actually been reduced further to £17.47.

What’s the offer?

Tesco is selling region 2 DVD players for £17.92 in stores. It’s part of the Tesco Value Electrical range (although there is no brand name on the player).

How can I buy one?

The players are available in 126 of Tesco’s larger stores from today (not Tesco Metros). The player isn’t available online yet.

Can I play DVDs from other countries?

Unfortunately this player is region 2 only, meaning you can’t player US discs which may be cheaper than UK ones.

I bought one but it wouldn't even play my shop-bought DVDs so I got my money back on it.

I would imagine that the is a model number at least, if the is you can search the interned for a code that will unlock the dvd player so it will play any dvd
I have done this with my dvd player and it plays them all now :j

    I posted this a while back .... it's a Technika 103

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1692483#post1692483

Details on how to make this multi-region are also included in my post.

I've yet to find a DVD which it won't play ..... worth every 1,797 pennies I paid for it !!!

Don't buy it thinking you will be able to hack it. Some (like Sony and Panasonic) are notoriously unhackable although the cheaper ones tend to be easier to find codes for.

Sometimes you have to get a special remote and sometimes you have to get a chip fitted inside.

Beware of sites that ask for payment though, if your player can be hacked, it can usually be found with a good search engine.

There are free programs on the web that can be loaded to a PDA which will enable you to hack the likes of Sony DVD players without haviing to buy a new remote. Your PDA will then act as a remote for the DVD and TV too. Did this with my Palm Tungsten E. ;)
