  • Hi all,

I'm about to go into my final year of study for my BSc and I'm about to apply for my final year loan. Since my last application me and my brother have moved out and so we won't be getting at all funded by our parents.

Will I be able to receive any additional funding? We're currently living with some friends and ideally a little more would be helpful. Last year I got around a £3k as a non-income assessed loan. Should I expect the same amount or will it be different now we're no longer at home?

    Regards,

    Jonaid

the loan amount is higher if you dont live at home...... approx £4500
whereas it is £3200 if living at home

    Question

I have just sent off my (financially assessed) online application for student loan (4th year) - i want to apply for the maintenance grant this year. i have filled in the form online but there appears to be no option to apply for the grant on the online form?

i remember on the written application there was a little tickbox asking do you want to apply for a maintenance grant? but this isn't on the online application. Will I get the grant automatically when I am financially assessed?

    Did you start in 05/06?

Are you an 'old system' student where you don't pay the £3000+ fees?

If you are 'old system' you don't get the maintenance grant. It was the HE grant in 05/06 I believe and that is assessed automatically - you don't need to tick a box.

As a rule if the application is assessed by an LEA, providing the information required is there, the LEA will assess for everything they are able to even if the box isn't ticked - contrary to popular belief, they will try and give money where they can ;o)

As Robnye says the amount of maintenance loan available increases if you are living outside the parental home (just tick elsewhere instead of living with parents). In terms of how you are assessed, you will still be assessed on your parents income if you are still under 25.

    Hi

I am currently working 4 days per week (32 hours) on nearly minimun wage, in addition i recently enrolled on a distance learning course in sport and recreation mangement (level 4). I was wondering if there is any way that i can apply for any funding/grants towards the course fee and/or books etc? I have looked at the PTG1 form, but am i eligable?

    Regards

    David King

I don't know alot about the distance learning stuff I'm afraid. As far as I'm aware PTG1 is the correct form - though I'd check with the OU if it is an OU course - I know the OU do some things differently.

I don't know about your eligibility though and I don't think PTG1 courses can be assessed until after the course has started I'm afraid

the assessed part is optional..... otherwise you should be entitled to the £4500 (approx) (unless ive got it completely wrong - in which case my daughter will be stuffed or my bank balance will be)

  • Hello, I currently earn just over the threashold and have been refused deferment. However a large part of my wages comes from a bonus and also overtime. I have contacted SLC and they have said that I am earning over the threashold and that my overtime and bonus count towards it. Is this correct because at anytime my bonus could be lost and if I decide not to work overtime I would be under the threashold. Please help. Paul

are you talking about the repayment threshhold of £15 per annum....?

my understanding is that, unlike income tax, which is recalculated every payday, taking into account, ups and downs in your wage (ie bonus, overtime etc), the calculation for student loan repayment is fixed at that point in time, so a deduction would be made every month if your income was deemed to be over the £15K/12 threshhold
