Personally I think your 'family friend who works in a bank' gave you poor if not wrong advice, but start with Martin's myth-busting article and make up your own mind.

Also read the threads about Erudio who current student loans will be likely to be sold off to.
Everyone seems very blase that student loans are fine and the terms and conditions will be set when they are sold off but it is the interpretation of the terms and conditions that will bite people in the butt.
This is why they are selling them off, the government couldn't get away with such debt collecting Wonga style behavior but Erudio can.
Post 1998 students were told loans don't go on credit records and won't affect your ability to get a mortgage. After they were recently sold off people are having them put on credit reports as being on a "payment holiday" which is what is used when someone is in severe financial trouble and need their utility/ loan payments put on hold while they try to scrap around for some money.
Having this on the reports is affecting people's ability to even open a bank account!!!!!

Just make sure she knows that the plan is to sell-off the loans to Arrow global debt collecting agency which is terrible. The loans are held in a shell company called "Erudio student loans"

There is, AFAIK, a lower amount you can claim if you are living at home.

Maintenance grant £3,387 (income upto £25k) which doesn't have to be paid back, and the balance upto £4,418 (living at home) can be claimed as a loan.

  • Hi, I started my science GCSE in September and paid the full cost of £440. I receive working tax credit and child tax credit, and now realise that I may have got help paying for this course. My income is less than £16,000 per year (only work 16 hours per week) my two questions are:
    a) was I entitled to any help with the tuition costs?
    b) am I able to claim back any of the money I have already paid?
  • Yes if your are a student in a university you still get student loans depending on what course you are doing.
