Im going back into the second year because I have been out of study for 6 years. The only way you can go straight into the degree 3rd year is by doing them back to back.
So I am still not fully understanding as to why do you only get one go at studying with tuition fess yet I can have 5 years with the student loan? I have never claimed a tuition fee loan before as I have always been under my parents care when studying and they were over the means tested amount. Therefore in the past my parents have always paid them. Now I am married with two kids and nolonger my parents responsibility.
How can I have already used up my tuition fee loan and the hiccup year when I have never had one before?

It's not based on whether you took the loan or not, it's based on whether you could have.

Why are you going into a second year and not third? The HND is the equiavalent to the first 2 years of a degree.

You are effectively repaeting a year of study, and you have already had your free repeat year (you are allowed 1 years extra tuition for any hiccups, which you've already used up).

Unless you move seamlessly from an HND to a degree in the same university,it's more common to go into 2nd year as a top up because of the different areas that are studied.

OP, if your degree subject is something offered by the OU, you're likely to find that they're your best option for giving you the full credit for your previous study.
  • Hi
I received a course fee grant for my first 2 years of a part time foundation degree. I dropped out of my third year in October and was told I may have to pay for the first semester but then heard nothing. I've now had a letter demanding I pay for the first semester within seven days (think previous letters may have been sent to my old address as I haven't received them). I can't afford to pay £750, is there anything I can do about this? I'm assuming you can't apply for a grant if you have dropped out, will the college be willing for me to pay in installments?

Gizmo, that's down to the college, nobody here could advise you on that.

Debbie, did you receive any funding at all for the HND?

I'm really sorry to say that getting married is going to have really adverse effects on your loan amount. If you're unmarried, your partners income is not relevant to your assessment whether you live together or not. When you get married this changes and you're assessed on your partner's income. Depends on what's affordable for you, this has really changed our potential plans to get married.

What I will just add to amie's post, there may actually be a loophole here in the regulations, regarding events after the 1st September.

Will look through them to confirm in detail, make sure it's not closed.

Hi guys, thanks for the info. It isn't going to affect when we get married, it will just make the first year a bit tighter than it would otherwise be. Taiko, did you get a chance to check and confirm?

Checked it out, no clause has been added into the guidance. I'd therefore state that, as the event occurs after the 1st day of the academic year, you would not need to declare this until the following year of the course.

If possible, I could really do with a little advice. I've scanned through quite a few of the thread pages, but just want to double check that I've read correctly.

This October I am hoping to start my English Literature degree through the Open university, but study full time to complete in three years. Then complete my PGCE in Secondary English in a 'brick' uni nearby.

In 2007 I started my business degree, but decided the course wasn't for me, and left after three months. Because of these three months I won't be able to apply for a tuition loan will I? Will this be the case for the whole of the degree, or only for the first year?

Can you apply for for a maintenance loan or bursary whilst studying through the OU? I have two young children, and combined my husband and I earn around £31,000.

    Many Thanks :))

    Hi
My daughter has just heard from Student Finance and her Maintenence Loan will be £3575.
This I understand is the 72% of the maximum grant. The remaining 28% is means tested.
Does this mean she will not be receiving any more? Acording to our household income she should be getting a loan.
Please help, I thought I understood all this, but now am a bit confused.

Is she a new or continuing student? Will assume she is a new student for now.

She would be entitled to a loan for tuition fees(assuming she hasn't gone to uni before and that she has ticked the box for tuition fee loan on the application)
The maximum grant she would be entitled to is £3250 (grant is the 'free' money)
If she will be living away from home and studying outside of London the max maintenance loan she can have is £5500.
They will look at your income and work out her entitlement to a grant/partial grant, when they reach this figure they will reduce the maintenance loan accordingly(has no affect on tuition fee loan)
As long as she has ticked the boxes for grant and tuition fee loan there shouldn't be a problem
