Sorry I don't know enough about dependent/independent students (only where to find the link;) )
I guess another question would be has she totally funded herself this past year(this would need to be proven with evidence) or has brother's family 'kept' her.
Hopefully Taiko will be along soon to advise

Think you're both along the right lines tbh. I'll respond again once replies are received to the above.

I'm a continuing student and have received my student loan assessment for next year. It is for exactly the same amount as I'm getting this year. Is it not supposed to increase with inflation? I think it's a joke, my fees can rise but my maintenance loan hasn't....

It's correct I'm afraid. I don't think the maintenance side of things has risen for a while now.

Hi all, I hope you can help me! I am going to uni in September and will need to apply for student finance. I am over 25 and currently engaged, but we are not living together. However, we will be getting married at some point in the next academic year (initially we wanted September, but we are not likely to be able to afford it by then). So what I need to know is, when completing the loan forms, do I include my finance's income, even though we are not married or living together and we still won't be by 1st September?

    Hi

I started uni in Sept 2011 as a mature student attending a full time degree.I get an NHs bursary of £3302 and a maintenance loan of £2324 per year. I thought I would be entitled to more from somewhere but student finance has said that is the maximum I can get. I tried NHS but they said I am getting the maximum too. I am 38, live on my own in a one bed rented flat. I was declared bankrupt in 2009 so cannot access an overdraft or any credit. Does anyone know of any other funding that may be available for me. I do not meet the criteria for housing benefit. I am working 2 hrs a week and potentially can get another 2 hrs work but this still is nowhere near enough to pay essentials like bills. IU am going to try for a hardship fund too

Sorry if this is posted in the incorrect place I don't know how to add a post in the correct forum!

    thanks for reading

Who claims the Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit for her?

My sister has been claiming and receiving it for the last few months. Does this mean any financial assessment will be based on her and my brother in law?

I guess my brother in law as the wage earner has 'kept her'?

Tbh it sounds like she will be classed as a dependent student and an assessment will be based on your sister and brother in law's income, however I must stress that I 'do not know' it is merely a best guess.
I am sure that Taiko will correctly advise you when he sees your updated info here

    It's an interesting one, dadio77.

Child benefit being claimed by the sister certainly helps the case. However, what would really decide whether or not she would be entitled to additional support really does depend on the circumstances that caused her to move out.

I realise that will involve quite a bit of personal details. Really to help me, I'd need to know these. Would you be willing to arrange a PM to be sent to me, and I'll take a look from there? I pretty much want any information regarding what caused the estrangement.
