Yes, just needs to get in contact with the SLC.
  • Hello (:

I know that everybody can get a loan for tuition, but I was wondering maybe you know could I get something like maintainance loan ar a grant, for rent, food, living etc.? I am an EU student, I haven't been living in UK for three years. All in all, what can an international student get? I am starting to panic...

Hi there. I'm hoping you will be able to give me some advice about pgce tuition fees.

I have never had a student loan, but my degree was funded by a LA grant many years ago (pre-SLC). I studied 3 years for my degree, and a further year for a professional qualification, all paid for by LA.

Please can you confirm whether I would be entitled to a loan to cover the pgce course fees or not?

Also, would I be entitled to any maintenance loan/grant, based on DH's income, and the fact that DS2 will be at sixth form college.

Hoping you can curb my worries, or at least let me know where I stand! Thanks

Funding for PGCE is a completely different system to loans for undergraduate funding, so your best bet is to look here.

I have been reading this thread with great interest but have not been able to find the answer to my situation, could I get any advice??

My partner is in his 1st yr of university and we have a 3 month old daughter. He has been refused Parental Learning Allowance. I am currently on statutory maternity pay of £124 pw. Our household income for tax year 11/12 is £21k.

We have a mortgage of £882pm and then utility bills on top. He also hasn't been allocated a bursary as our daughter was born on 1st Oct and uni start date was 19th Sept. We recieve £10pw Child Tax Credit, not entitled to Working Tax Credit or Matenity Grant.

Any advice would be great as I find it very difficult to understand why we haven't the PLA in particular??? Thanks xx:)

EU students can get a fee loan but generally no help with maintenance, I'm afraid.

Unless they meet the criteria to be classed as a migrant worker. For reference, I'd have a read of Schedule 1 of The Education (Student Support) Regulations 2011
  • Hi there,

I have managed to get myself into a complete mess with Student Finance and am wondering if anyone can help.

I am absolutely useless with forms and timekeeping and struggling to juggle everything else that is going on in our lives at present. My Hubby is in his second year of a foundation degree. I was asked to send SF evidence of hubbys commitments, which I sent our council tax bills and rental statement as I was asked over the phone. It has now come to light (possibly through my own mistakes/misunderstanding what was required) that i should have completed a form for this too. it appears that we now have a huge overpayment from last year and they have removed some of this years payments too.

Could anyone help me with two things really? One- what should I send them as evidence for financial commitments? Do I need to put in things for my income and tax credits too?

And also, will this award be re-instated when they recieve all the information? I am terrified that it won't be. I realise this is potentially all my doing as I am just awful with money/budgeting/getting forms in on time in general. I guess I have my head in the sand and need to wake up and smell the coffee. Having two children to juggle and work and hubby at uni is beginning to take it's toll on me I guess. Although I don't expect any sympathy as I know there are plenty in much worse situations than mine, I would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.

    Many thanks indeed

My advice? Tell your husband - the student - to take all the paperwork to the Student Union / Welfare / Support services and let HIM sort it out.

I honestly don't know what the outcome will be, but while he's there he can apply for a hardship payment.

And next year let him deal with this. It's what I'd say if you'd posted this about your child ...

  • Hi Savvy Sue,

I appreciate your comment and I think I will ask him. I always offer to do these things, thinking/hoping I'll be fine and this time it will be different. We have been married for 5 years and Hubby would happily take it all on but I carry on saying oh no it's fine. So it is my own fault. I will definately go home this evening and lay it all out on the table and get him to share it with me.

    Thanks for your reply.
