  • Are you getting the income-assessed or non-income assessed bursary? You are only entitled to a reduced student loan with the first type.

Are you classed as a dependent student (ie under 25, no children, not married, not been supporting self for 3 years). If you are a dependent student, it will go on your parents' location. Otherwise you need to apply to the Local Authority for where your permanent address is at the point of application. It will then be this LA who have responsibility for funding you for your whole course.

For SLC, definitely 25. This catches a lot of students out. Generally the only alternative is 3 years of living independently i.e. earning enough money to support yourself. You would need to prove this with 3 P60s; benefits count as supporting yourself, having a student loan does not.
  • So, if you're assessed as an independant student for your first year at uni, I assume you remain an independant student all the way through your course?

    Thanks SA!

I'm getting the income assessed bursary, and I'm 27, been working for the past 10 years so guess I'm classed as independent! I'm moving to Brent next week, its private rented accomodation and I'll be there permanently throughout uni, so if i understand you correctly, I apply through Brent, and not Lambeth where I used to live? Sorry if that's making you repeat stuff, I'm finding all these forms and things so confusing!

    thanks a million.

My application (done online) has been approved but the SLC are awaiting for my signature. They've sent the letter out to my previous address twice now. I had a look at my account online and found a copy of the letter in the correspondence section (pdf/gif files). Do you think it's possible to print this letter and send it to them? or do they need the original letter they post?

Secondly I am going into my final year and only getting 2/3 Maintenance loan of what I got in my previous years... the SLC claim that this is because I will not be at university during the summer once I complete my course.... well who's going to be paying my rent? The amount I'm getting will cover 2/3 of my rent but will leave me with having to spend £1100 out of my own pocket... I have about £400 overdraft available but that still means I will have to hand over £100 of my own money each month to break even... this is not even taking books/food money into account!
    SLC: £13000+

Sorry but this is before my time :rotfl:

The best I can advise is to contact the SLC repayments people. See here for what direct.gov has to say for pre-1998 loans.

    Definitely independent.

Apply to the LA you live in. (to be fair it's fairly arbitrary where you apply to)

    Enjoy your course!
