Hi I was wondering if anyone knows an estimate of how long it takes to process loan applications? I'm in my second year from september and sent my application online on the 15th of July. Last year it was about two weeks.

Generally 6-8 weeks at this time of year, if not more. SLC will not guarantee that you'll get it sorted before you start the year as you missed their deadline of end of May (for returning students).
  • I didn't realise there was a deadline of may:o Oh well my own fault:mad:

i applied way way before the deadline and they've still not sorted mine out :( doesnt look like its gonna be here on time. looks like my overdraft will have to be used instead :/
  • So... Silly question. If they haven't assessed student finance forms, for tuition fees and maintanence, by the start of term, what happens with paying my tuition? I can access the money needed to pay some of it, but there's no way I can find the full £3070 tuition *plus* my first rent installment and money to live on - does anyone know what I'd need to find? I spoke to the uni regarding rent, I can change this to weekly/monthly payment if I can't make the first termly payment, but I have no idea what I can do about the tuition fees!

    Any help, much appreciated :)

  • You won't have to pay anything I don't think, the university don't get it straight away anyway. Well mine didn't they got it in two installments according to the letter I got last year.

I think mine is going through at last  I just checked online and it's now been assesed so hopefully I'll find out how much I'm getting soon:j I just hope it doesn't take forever.
  • Ah, I take it then that I could log in on the student finance website and that should tell me whether they've actually picked my paperwork up and started looking at it? I phoned them a last week to check they'd recieved all my evidence, but they couldn't give me any other information at the time!

  • Edit: Doesn't matter I undestand now.

Fees are paid be the SLC in two installments, one in Feb and one in May, so don't worry about fees.

You may be able to get a bridging loan from the access to learning fund from your uni to tide you over until your loan comes through if it is late, but you still have weeks before you go, so don't panic. You can also make use of your student account's overdraft facility if necessary.

If you applied months ago and haven't heard, you need to contact them to check. Either check your account online or ring up. If you fall under the pilot scheme (ie you sent your form to SFD at Darlington) you have to call the horrendously unhelpful "help"line, otherwise, you should be able to your local authority as they do the assessments for students not under the pilot scheme.

Again, you still have loads of time left before you start.

You can also contact your uni's student welfare/finance advisor who can contact SLC/local authority on your behalf if necessary.
