noodlebutty - as the student loan is taken directly out of an individuals wages once they earn over £15000 per year - I don't see how they can take anyone elses income in to account when deducting them - not that anything would suprise me. I am sure someone will post if this is wrong.

yep repayments for people who took out loans after Sept 1998 are calculated on individual incomes... 9% of your gross wages above £15000 p.a.

  • Sent some requested personal documents to SLC in order from them to process my grant & loan. I did request they send them back to me, but haven't received them yet and this was a number of weeks ago. Should I be telephoning inquiring of their whereabouts, or should I just wait a bit longer? I'm waiting to fill out the DSA forms, but want to fill them out once I have received my documents back and I know I'm all go for grants ect.
  • Hi,

Its very kind of you all to offer out all this advice.

My question is, I'm an 'old' style student too. My salary went above the £24,000 threshold a while back and now my direct debits for the 4 loans have started coming out. Problem is the amount they are taking out is over £140 a month and its hitting me quite hard.

My salary is about 25,500. Is there anyway of lowering my repayments? If I were to ring up what kind of evidence or proof would they need? Many thanks.

p.s. to prospective/new students: loans repayments are different now. The salary threshold is much lower (so you don't have to earn as much before you have to start paying it back) but the repayments amounts are much lower too.

  • Hi, i'm studying a language course at uni, and was wondering if in my 3rd year abroad, which is part of the course, will I receive a student loan? Also, will I receive the maintenance grant from the government?

I found the payment of fees very confusing. The need to pay or not to pay is based on the parents income -I got that bit. The loan for the student does not include an amount to cover the fees - I got that bit. However I think it is meant to be used to pay the fees - don't get that bit at all. My son had to set up a direct debit on starting at university to pay the fees - why? He had to pay the fees within a few months - his university did not stagger the payment over the year. The loan is paid in three stages at the beginning of each term. The amount of loan for the first term would not have covered the cost of the fees which had to be paid.

My son got demands for the fees to be paid or his exam work would not be marked. Confused - so I phoned the local authority to be told that the fees were my sons responsibility and they could not discuss it with me. I pointed out that they were assessed on our income and not his and he would not have enough to pay them all at once and we had intended to pay them.

The response to that was that my son should not be at university if he could not afford it!!!!!!!!!! I do so wish I had a recording of that conversation. We paid the fees and they did not object to the cheque coming from our bank account.
  • Received DSA forms to fill in. Anyone any idea whether or not I need to send proof of medical condition when I send the forms.

Actually not even sure who I send the forms back too

    Please advise somebody.

I want to move abroad next year, I know I'll have to inform the SLC of my location. But will they still not ask for payment details as I am under the new scheme or will I have to defer like the old scheme as I wont be using my national insurance number and they cant trace my wage.
