If she applies for extenuating circumstances is she supposed to do this now or if and when she wants to return to university. I am a little concerned she does not apply elsewhere,(hopefully) be offered a place and accept this then find the funding is not available.
Thanks for your help and I hope your health is better now.

As far as I'm aware she cannot apply for extenuating circumstances when she's not going to be applying for student finance, she needs to do that when she applies.
However it's best to gather the information now so she had evidence for when she is well enough to reapply.

I made sure that I kept my university fully informed about my health situation and went through the correct procedures when I left due to ill health. I also kept copies of my medical letters to the university.

When I reapplied for university and student finance 4 years later it did take longer to process my application for finance as they initially didn't take into account extenuating circumstances. But once I'd provided my medical letters and the letter from my previous university stating that I'd left my course due to ill health I was told all my previous study was discounted and I was eligible for full funding again.

I am much improved but my situation has changed so I decided that the OU is now my best option if I want to ever graduate :)

Slight prob of my own - I have had two years' SF (including the grace year), and had to wait to see this year if I was going back into year 2. I turns out I'm deferring until September (external resits, no loan/grant entitlement) but the SL and Maintenance loan have been accepted, proccessed this year and the first instalment paid in. I still have two more years from September 2012 to complete. There is no course this year - I am simply handing in coursework.
It is not as simple as paying back the first instalment to the repayments body, as on the system it will say I have had three years by the end of this year, which I won't have - and this needs to be corrected - whether I have paid back the money or not. I don't need a part time student loan either for this year, as this will affect what I get in my final year. I know I will need to reapply for Student Finance in Febuary but am worried that if this year's proceedings aren't reversed I'll not be entitled to anything the final year and get much less next year.
I have rang Student Finance and they keep referring me back to the repayments office. I keep being sent round in circles. HELP.

Speak to your academic registry at the university, as they need to confirm to SFE that you are repeating without attending. Entitlement will stop, and you'll get a letter asking about repaying, this won't count as a year of support.
  • Hi everyone. If I pay upfront next year (yes, I know this can have disadvantages, but that's not the issue in hand) when will the payments be taken from me? For instance, will it be in three lots of £3000, one each term? Or will it be two lots, or all at once, or what?

    Thanks.

Twice a year. Usually 1 in Jan, one in April/May.
  • hi, my son is on a 4 year course- this year is his foundation year and he has just applied for finance for next year (year 1) , however when we filled the form in it said he could get the maximum tuition fee 3000 ish which would leave 5000+ to find! i thought if you started your course before 2012 you didnt get hit by the changes , we're on income support and theres no way we can find that money. i just wondered whether when they assess his claim they'll change the amount he can get or if the tution fee listed will change ( as it was already put in as 9000 odd ) or do we have to apply elsewhere?
i hope you can help as now i'mjust confused!
    regards

If he has applied now then he has applied for the wrong academic year. Applications for Sept 2012 are not open yet, that is why the form is only stating the £3000 tuition fee as it if for Sept 2011.

Just found this on their website..........so the hell starts all over again NOW!
Hopefully with a few extra months, things will be better.......PLEASE. :rotfl:
Forgive me if not allowed to cut n paste from SFE website.
Applications for academic year 2012/13 are now open

Student Finance England are now accepting applications from students planning to study in academic year 2012/13.
Continuing on the same course in 2012/13?
If you applied last time for basic student finance - loans not based on your household's income - you don't need to do anything just now.
Student Finance England will write to you by the end of February 2012. In most cases, they'll automatically complete your financial assessment; all you'll need to do is sign and return the form they send you.
Going to university or college for the first time in 2012/13?
You don’t need to have a confirmed place at university to apply for student finance, so do it now!

    Good Luck everyone!
  • Hi

I will be starting university in 2012 as a nursing student. I applied for a student loan, and was only given the option to apply for a non-means tested maintenance loan. I was hoping to apply for a means tested loan but I never got the option (although it did say use the calculator below and click 'apply' if you wish to do this, but there was no calculator or apply button!). Also, I saw nothing about Parents Learning Allowance, Childcare Allowance or (special support grant - what exactly is this?)! I can't estimated the childcare allowance as I have no idea the days/hours I will be studying/on placement.

Afterwards I used the student finance online calculator and got a completely different figure! I'm sooooo confused, and can't afford to miss out on anything I'm entitled to.

I will be leaving fulltime employment to start university, I'm a single parent of two children.

Can you offer me any advice?

Thanks so much for your anticipated help

You cannot apply for Parents Learning Allowance, Childcare Grant, or the means tested maintenance loan due to the type of course you are studying.

You'll only be eligible for the reduced rate maintenance loan from Student Finance England, in accordance with Paragraph 38(4)(a) of The Education (Student Support) Regulations 2011.
  • You should be applying for the NHS bursary and the additional funding that's available for nursing degrees.
