We have been on current year assessment for 2 years now. I was slightly surprised to be 'automatically' put onto CYA this year using the same details as last year.

For next year it would be advantageous to go back to the 'normal' retrospective basis. Is it possible to elect to go back to the retrospective assessment basis or are you permanently on CYA once you have moved to it?

I can't see anything on the Student Finance site that specifically covers this. Everything seems to be related to switching TO CYA rather than from it.

Posted this two weeks ago with no response ... can anyone advise please?

No, CYI assessment rules mean that figure is used for what ends up being 3 consecutive years.
  • I am new to forums of any kind so hope I am posting correctly. I was hoping someone could help me with regard to my daughter's situation. She started a BA at a London university in Sept 2010 having been dealing with anorexia with some help for about 2 years. Unfortunately London proved really hard for her and her condition deteriorated so she sought help from a therapist and we thought she would be able to complete the course. Unexpectedly her accommodation fell through 4 days before the start of her second year and on speaking to student services at the university they advised she could start her second year and if finding new accommodation proved too much of a strain as long as she deferred before December 2011 no fees would be due. Due to the really competitive nature of the housing market in London 2 more houses fell through and this not unnaturally was really stressful for her. (Initially she was commuting 2 hours each way for lectures then a friend of a friend gave her temporary housing) She was diagnosed with osteoporosis in November 2011 and therefore, because the housing was aggravating her anorexia and there was an urgent need to get her treatment for her osteoporosis, her GP and Therapist advised her to apply to the university to defer the year. She has done this and we have notified student loans of her deferral however she feels that whilst she intends to take every bit of help the NHS will give and to try her best to get better she feels that it may be better if she were to apply to another university outside London in a smaller more integrated campus situation to alleviate some of the problems of living in London (travelling, difficulty getting access food she is comfortable eating whilst at uni, distance from fellow students so problems with isolation etc. etc.) Since she started her second year of the degree will she be able to get loans for fees and maintenance and the maintenance grant for the full 3 years of a new degree if she manages to get onto a new course elsewhere? She can't transfer to any of the universities she has in mind as her current course does not really cover any of the same first year subjects so it would need to be a fresh degree. Any help and advice regarding this would be very gratefully received.
  • Have you taken into account how much the fees will go up next year?

Has she looked at transferring her credits to study with the OU if a suitable course is available?

I think she'll be able to apply for student finance under extenuating circumstances and get full funding again - I've done this, need to provide medical evidence to say why she couldn't carry on and may need to provide evidence that she's now capable of studying.

As ONW said fees are going up in 2012/13 but she'll get loans to cover the fees - just means she'll have more student debt.

The Open University may be a good option if there's a course she wants to do as she can do it in her own time, around her treatment and won't have to leave home. Funding is changing so that from September you get can get student loans for part-time courses and she may get her fees paid for her.

She also may be able to transfer some/all of her credits from her current university towards an OU degree.

I had to give up university twice due to ill health so this year I transferred all my credits to the OU and I am starting a module in February which if I pass I'll just have my final year to do.

Although the fees will increase substantially we think it is better if she thinks what will be best for her in the long run however I do think she needs to be studying with other young people and I am not sure you get that with OU, do you?

Thanks for the suggestion though as it is something to bear in mind.

If she applies for extenuating circumstances is she supposed to do this now or if and when she wants to return to university. I am a little concerned she does not apply elsewhere,(hopefully) be offered a place and accept this then find the funding is not available.

Thanks for your help and I hope your health is better now.
  • Slight prob of my own - I have had two years' SF (including the grace year), and had to wait to see this year if I was going back into year 2. I turns out I'm deferring until September (external resits, no loan/grant entitlement) but the SL and Maintenance loan have been accepted, proccessed this year and the first instalment paid in. I still have two more years from September 2012 to complete. There is no course this year - I am simply handing in coursework.
It is not as simple as paying back the first instalment to the repayments body, as on the system it will say I have had three years by the end of this year, which I won't have - and this needs to be corrected - whether I have paid back the money or not. I don't need a part time student loan either for this year, as this will affect what I get in my final year. I know I will need to reapply for Student Finance in Febuary but am worried that if this year's proceedings aren't reversed I'll not be entitled to anything the final year and get much less next year.
I have rang Student Finance and they keep referring me back to the repayments office. I keep being sent round in circles. HELP.

Just a little update from me, spoke to someone yesterday from SFE after being fobbed off with yet more excuses this lady was actually very helpfull. The next step I have to take she said is to get a solicitors letter to prove my estrangement from my mum as this is the only way I will get the grant. I have no idea how much this will cost. Would a supporting letter from a family friend along with the solicitors letter and my fathers death certificate surfice?
    Many thanks
    Sarah.
