Hi all, hoping someone will have some experience of my son's problem. He was doing a Master's degree and should have been starting his third year this month, but he didn't get enough points for his second semester modules so he has to re-take them, this will be next February through till May or June, then all being well start his third year in Sep 2011. He has reverted his course back to a Bachelor's degree but the SLC won't agree a loan for the six month period covering his retakes. He got his loans the first two years no problem, but they're saying he can't have the loan to cover the 6 month period for his re-takes. Apparently, the reason is because he had a loan for a different course at a different uni which he started in 2005 but left at the end of the first year. He's 26, so assessed independently. He's starting work next week so that he can live until February but he can't work full time from February and do his re-takes at the same time. His father and I are trying to save up as much as we possibly can to put towards his tuition fees and living costs but we can't find all of it. Does anyone know what would be the best course of action for him to take now? Thank you for any advice.0

The general rule of HE funding is for the course years + 1. Unfortunately, your son has already used his "plus 1" year on his earlier course, which is why he isn't eligible for any funding for an extra period now.
Many students do work virtually full time hours whilst studying so I really can't see any reason why he couldn't do the same when covering work he has already done and he is more mature than the others.0 -
Hello SLCWorker,
I begine a 3 year law degree next week and, have applied to Student Finance England for a full loan and grant.
Student finance have confirmed today that they will only provide me with a £3.5k maintenance loan, no tuition fee loan and no grant.
This is because between 1999-2001 I studied for a HND in an unreleated field (media). However, I did not apply for any form of loan for this as my parents paid the course fees (registered as non means tested) and I was living at home at the time.
So, I had no financial help in 99/01 and I am recieving no financial help now aside from the amount to cover the anual price of my accomodation.
I am 29 and single so classed as an independent student, i will be living in student accomodation.
Can you sugest any help at all with securing a loan from Student finance or sugest any alternative ways of getting my tuition fees paid and a loan for mainetnance .

There isn't a way of getting a loan. you will have to pay yourself, get a parttime job and budget very carefully.0 -
Unfortunately, whether you self funded or not, you have had two years of HE already so you will only be eligible for another two years funding. In your situation, most people use the maintenance loan to pay the fees and live off savings or earnings. If this would be impossible for you, you could look at studying part time through the OU.0

Hello there
I’m after some advice please if anyone can help.
Last year from April 09 – Nov -09 I worked at DWP and I was earning just over the threshold so I was paying student loan each month, though it was just a few pounds.
I got my annual statement in from the Student Loan company yesterday and it said I hadn’t paid anything back through the PAYE system last tax year!
Who do I need to contact about this? I haven’t kept my payslips as I have my p60 now, though I changed jobs twice in the last tax year.
Thanks for any help in advance.0 -

Does it say it's a final statement or an interim?0 -
Hiya,
It says interim, but says something about the amount paid through PAYE between x and x date is 0, but I know I paid at that time.
It could be that they're still waiting for information from the HMRC about the other jobs you've had during the financial year. You need to wait until you have a final statement before contacting the SLC. Don't worry about it, the payments will be creditted to your statement eventually and you've got your P60 so you can prove the amounts you've paid. Why does my statement show the wrong amount of repayment?
This usually happens if you have more than one employer in the tax year. Once HM Revenue & Customs send us your updated tax year information, including student loan deductions from any additional employers, we will adjust your balance and send you a new statement.
Details of repayment and how to contact the SLC can be found on the SLC repayment website.0
