Hi,
I have been given a maintainence loan from SLC. At the end of my studies, will this loan effect my credit rating? I believe that a tuition fee loan does not, is it the same for a maintenance loan?
Thank you,
Jim0 -
Can anyone advise me if a retirement grant and redundancy payment would be counted as earned income and affect my daughters eligibility for maintenance loan/grant?0

thanks for your reply,
I did do that calc but it doesnt appear to give him anything extra for me having another son to support. do you think that is correct?? dont you get anything for having other children??
thanks jo
£1130 (roughly, can't remember the exact figure) is taken off your household income for each dependant child (other than the student).
And the £3700 sounds about right. I'd advise you to send in the evidence of the pension contributions if they are private pensions (i.e. not paid through salary or contributed to by your employer) as this may increase the award slightly, dependant on the amount you paid in.0 -
Sorry, been on a mini-break, will get back to those who wanted my help over the weekend.0

Hi,
I am hoping you can help - I could do with some information on how the choldcare grant, parent's learning allowance and chilcare grant are assessed. We have a 3 year old son and my partner is about to embark on his 2nd year of a foundation degree. For the last academic year my partner received the full entitlement of the parent's learning allowance but this year we've been told he's not entitled to anything. My salary for the assesed year is significantly higher (17k ish) than the previous year (9k ish) but I can't find anything that tells me how this is actually calculated as I thought we'd receive at least some PLA. The childcare element hasn't been assessed yet but in order to work out our finances I could do with being able to anticipate how much this will be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kirsten0 -
I am a parent of a soon to be student. Can you tell me what 'residual income' means? Is it all income after tax and NI have been paid, or is it disposable income after mortgage, council tax, utilities etc have been paid?0

I am having a nightmare with SFE. Please can anyone help me with SFE Income Assessed Loan?
My daughter has applied for Student Finance. In Jan 2010 SFE wrote to me requesting information/evidence for my daughters Student Finance, as I earn £21k per annum and I'm a single parent I believe my daughter is entitled to extra help or a grant in addition to the usual student loan.
I sent the required evidence via Recorded Delivery at the beginning of February 2010 and heard nothing, eventually my evidence was returned. In April 2010 my daughter received a Final Notification which stated it was 'not financially assessed'. I rang SFE who I believe put a 'permission to consent' on her account so I could speak with SFE advisers.
SFE stated my daughter had ticked the wrong box on her application. I said if this was the case then why were SFE writing to me asking me to supply information about my financial circumstances?
In April 2010 my daughter received a Financial Notification 2010/2011. I rang SFE and queried the notification as it was for a 'non income assessed loan' as this was not what my daughter had requested. Daughter was told to sign it as the means tested part would be sorted out as soon as possible.
Nothing happened so I called SFE in May2010 and was told a variety of conflicting information ranging from 'don't worry this will be sorted out' to 'you will have to complete the entire process again.' SFE then said that my documents had not been matched to my daughters application, or they had not been scanned properly. Eventually a supervisor told me that my original evidence was not received by SFE (despite Royal Mail's website confirming delivery of the evidence). The supervisor 'helpfully' suggested that in future I should send evidence by Recorded Delivery!
2nd lot of evidence was posted Recorded Delivery in May 2010 and was returned in August 2010 to my Mother's address! Still no update on daughter's SFE account saying that her application was going to be Income Assessed/Means Tested.
I rang SFE again last week after my daughter received a letter from SFE which again stated her student finance was not income assessed. The advisor told me that I had sent an incorrect P60 (our work's financial year does not end until May 31st so it was impossible for me to send a P60 which had not yet been produced, on both occasions I provided the most up to date and correct evidence). SFE advised that a letter was send in July 2010 regarding this (I have not received a letter) I was told another letter would be sent.
Another letter arrived yesterday which was a duplicate of the one my daughter received last week, once again SFE have not assessed my income.
I rang yesterday only to be told that the permission to consent had been set up incorrectly and the adviser would not talk to me! Suffice to say I lost the plot with him. I now believe the permission to share should have been set up via a written/emailed request rather than over the phone.
I am at my wits end with SFE, my daughter applied for her loan in January 2010 and it appears SFE have made a catalogue of errors which they are making no attempt to rectify. I have sent everything they required in good time and just don't know what to do next - Please can anyone help? Thanks.0 -
Hi
Just wondering how long it will be before I find out about loans ect. I will admit late applyer only applied June10 as only then found out I could do a uni courtse, was looking at doing a fe course, in finacial law, but was advised that I could do BA business and accounting management, Im a mature student lol (34). Anyway, after finding all the evidence (why dont they tell you online you need to send in brth certificate OMG they are daft)
I checked my page on friday say that it is being processed, I have one that says awarded letter sent thats my disabled student grant (have a joint condition, been on IB for 7 yrs now) so I presume it means that I am getting the otehr grants/loans. But how long ??? or is that a silly question. I need to know as My youngest is 3 and at nursery, she gets her 15hrs, but to go full time (so I have time to study, 8.20-4.20) will be £95 a week, and I cant afford it, I can manage the 1st few weeks with just the 15hrs hopefully, nursery is flexable, dh works full time nighs so around some of the time.
So my quetion is how long??
May thanks, sorry about typing, my right thumb dislocted am so hard to type.

Without boring you I have twins due to start different uni's in Sept one on a 5 yr course and one on a 4.
Myself and my partner are self-employed and submitted relevant evidence re: our 10K earnings for the year.
Twin 1 was assessed (4 diff letters) as receiving Maint. Grant 2906
and then Maint. Loan 3838
Twin 2 was assessed as Maint. Grant 2906
Maint Loan. 2385
Then Twin 1 changed uni and was reassessed now as 2655 Maint Loan instead of £3838?? I thought everyone had a minimum of 2763?
After many many many phone calls they tell me that Twin 1 has been reassessed and if I am unhappy I need to go through the appeals procedure. They also mentioned split contributions due to two students living at home? and gave me a number to ring (Split Contributions_ which just told me to ring the Student Finance number again! I feel I am going round in circles.
Can anyone explain? Surely with our income both boys should receive the full maintenance loan 3838 and full grant 2906? Also why would changing university affect entitlement?
Thanks in advance - very confused!0
