    Hi
i was hoping you might be able to advise me, my son has got his loan from SLC and he has been assessed at about £3700 maintenance loan for the year. Whilst I didn't expect him to get a grant (we do earn too much and want to help support him) I did expect him to get more of a loan.

It was assessed on our wages of £57000 p.a. and we also have another son at home that we support, (hes 15)

my question is do you think this sounds right, the only thing extra than the P60/CB etc the SLC have asked for is statement of my pension payments but nothing else.

    Thanks
    Jo

If you download this PDF, on page 12 it lets you make a rough estimate of how much loan/grant your child is entitled to and the amount a parent is to contribute. According to this, with your income he'll only get 75% of the maintenance loan. I'm in Scotland and don't know how much the full maintenace loan is for you, but on our figures 75% of the full loan(up to £4950) = £3712.50.
This would appear to tally with your figures.

Is your other son a student? i think it's only if you are supporting another student.

  • Right now, I'm in serious need of help and advice as it seems that SLE have somehow screwed things up where my student finance is concerned.

Basically, at the beginning of August, I received a letter dated 29th of July (and which I've kept for obvious reasons) stating that I would receive both the full Maintenance Loan as well as the full rate of Special Support Grant which I was advised to claim for by John Moores University as it wouldn't affect the Maintenance Loan due to being eligible for the Special Support Grant as I am claiming DLA due to my epilepsy.

Today, I received not one, but two letters from them stating that because they've changed my Grant from a Special Support Grant to a Maintenance Grant, it's affected my Maintenance Loan!

As soon as I got the letter, I phoned the Student Finance England helpline where a helpful person told me what had happened (and was even sympathetic to my problem) and why my funding had been affected.

In the meantime, I'm stressing out with worry over this and I want to know if it's advisable to get a letter from my jobcentre adviser (who also happens to be the disability adviser for the local office) ASAP and send or email a copy to them proving that I'm eligible for the SSG because I'm claiming DLA.

I've already checked, double checked and triple checked various welfare sites at various universities concerning SSG and they definitely say that I'm eligible for SSG as a disabled student. So why the idiots at SLE are suddenly saying that I'm ineligible 2 weeks before I'm due to enrol for the course, I don't know.

If anyone who works for SLE can help me out before I pull out what little hair I have left or I worry myself so sick that I end up in hospital, they'll have my eternal gratitude.:D

Did you provide the student loan company with the wrong bank details or has the student loan company made a mistake?
The SLC should be able to contact the bank and request a return. If that doesn't work then you could contact the financial ombudsman as it's a case of 'misapplied credit'.
This BBC article may give you some hope with getting it back.
Make sure the SLC now have your correct bank details .

I don't think he gets extra because you have other children to support who aren't students as you can claim child benefit for children under 16 (19 in full time education)

Being a school pupil doesn't count I'm afraid, it's just if you have another child who is studying further/higher education.
