I only doing one module this year, the one I failed last year. The person from uni said that I would no be entitled.

If you're in attendance, you're entitled to the maintenance loan in full. Your university are wrong.

My son has realised he's on the wrong course. He's hoping to change to a different course at the same university, but he may be too late to do it this year. If he does change this year he'll just have to fill in a change of circs form won't he?
If he can't change till the beginning of next year will it still be just a change of circs or will it count as a new degree, meaning he won't get a loan for next year?

Will he be starting again at the first year or the second year?

Note that if he chooses the correct units this year, it may well be possible for him to transfer directly into the second year of his new course at the end of this year.

He'd be starting again at the first year level. He's planning to change from an engineering degree to a pure science degree so there isn't the option to choose units this year. That's the reason it may be too late for him to switch this year. (The wrong sort of physics)

If this year is his first attempt on a higher education course, he'll be ok for funding for the full duration of the new course.

    Thank you.

His student advisor told him that if he didn't continue this year the SLC would just freeze his loan till next year.

I was under the impression he would have to repay it straight away. Will he not?

    Hi
My daughter is currently at Westminster college doing her first year, she was previously at Falmouth, but feels she was railroaded into doing the course of choice of her college tutors and not hers, she's not very forthright in nature and didnt want to bother anyone, this in the end had a detrimental effect on her health and wellbeing and had all of us worried to the point of driving there and taking her home.
She is very settled there and says it is exactly what she wanted to do and is extremely happy.
Over the summer she had thought she had sorted all of the funding out, she was even told as much, then she was told there was a problem with her forms and to do a new set, she had done this 3 times and was told yesterday that she would not be getting funding for the first year as she has had funding previously and that she will get it for year 2 and 3.
This has left her and all of us very worried, what are her options? if any.
She has tried to get in touch with student finance and anyone at the cillege who may be able to offer some advice, but has been told she cannot enter the college or use any of the facilities until it has been resolved. She has been there for over 6 weeks in halls of residence. Her stint at Falmouth was in her own words soul destrying, this I fear will be even more so.

Is she studying for a degree?
How many years of higher education funding has she had previously? - If she only had one year at Falmouth then she should be able to get funding for the full length of her degree at Westminister as you are allowed the length of your course +1 year.

If she's had more than one year of funding previously she will need to prove extenuating circumstances in order to get full funding for her new degree.
  • My local authority (in Wales) is handling my application for the Childcare Grant and Parent's Learning Allowance at the moment. I've already received my Loan but they are taking much longer to decide on these supplementary grants.

My question is, what income do they take into account for these grants? In particular, would the non-taxable PhD Bursary/Stipend that my husband receives be included? I know it isn't included for the Loan and Assembly Learning Grant but is it the same for the Childcare Grant and Parent's Learning Allowance etc?

I'm asking because my local authority were at first telling me that it wouldn't count for all of them and now they seem to have changed their minds  I'm still waiting to hear a final answer from them today or tomorrow.
