  • My parents have split up since I applied for my last student loan in first year - I have done an income assessed loan application based just on my mums income but they've asked for document evidence of their split. Their not yet divorced just living separately so what could I use to show this?

I am due to start an access to higher education course for 1 year at my local college. I am a lone parent with two small children and was wondering if there is any grants or loans i could apply for. I work part time and getting working tax but i need to buy books, computer etc. Help all seems to be when you start uni

Your father's rent book/lease/new mortgage/council tax? Basically, as much as possible to show that he's not part of the same household as you and your mother.

If this is your first level 3 course, you're not claiming IS and you're under 25 then you should be able to claim up to £30 per week ALG.

Most Access course don't require you to buy much in the way of books and many Access students use college IT facilities for the bits of the course that require it if they don't have a computer of their own.

    Good luck with your course.

    Hi Anyone!
I am 52 yrs old, I started Uni in Oct. 1996 and took out a student loan each year up to when I finished in June 1999. Please could you tell me if any of the loans can be wiped out now as I am over 50?

If you were coming to our college, you would probably qualify for your tuition fees to be paid due to your household income, 90% of childcare costs paid, book list on loan and help with you travel costs.

If you don't already have a level 3 course (2 A-Levels, NVQ 3, National Diploma or equivalent), and you don't claim certain benefits (tax credits and housing benefit is okay) then you will also be able to claim the Adult Learning Grant. You should visit the funding advisor at your college to check if there's anything else you can get and to pick up all of the forms you need.

A lone parent is likely to be claiming IS and, therefore ineligible for ALG.

Not all colleges are able to be as generous as yours. Where I used to work, money for childcare and travel had ben cut hard and was never more than 50% and often not that much.

I agree totally with seeing the college advisor as there is enormous variation these days between institutions.

If you were under 40 when you started your course then your loans are wiped out on eaching 50. If over 40 you have to wait until retirement age.

Actually, quite a lot of my lone parents work part-time and claim WTC, hence the suggestion.
