  • can i ask a question? i am starting my 2nd year in septmeber. have just moved in with partner who is starting degree in september. we are both 25 and will be full time students. is there additonal support we can get?

also, i have bi-polar disorder and was wondering if this meant i could get any additional support as working and studying is just not an option with my mental health issues.

    thanks in advance

For your health issues you are unlikely to get cash benefits. However you should apply for Disabled Students Allowance. This can pay for equipment such as a laptop, printer, internet access... it can also pay for non-medical helpers such as note takers. Speak to your university's disability centre for more information and advice.

I have paid off my loan but not before SLC had taken off yet more money from my salary so they now owe me money. Any idea when I am likely to see this?
    Many thanks.

you may want to ask your employer if they can do anything about this. I'm not sure how they know when to stop taking payments when you have repaid everything anyway, but it's possible they may be able to refund it.

make sure they know not to take any more in future too!

If no joy from your employer, give student loans company a ring.

  • Hi everyone,

I left university in 2001 with a large student loan to pay off but, despite earning over the threshold for several years, SLC have still not taken a penny of repayment. I have recieved a couple of random statements over the years (the first one I got wasn't until 2006) but they clearly state that its not a demand for repayment just for information purposes. I did actually call them up several years ago and was told that payments would be taken automatically but they never have.

I'm perfectly OK with the fact that SLC will probably catch up with me eventually and am happy to pay when I do, but my attitude is I may as well wait and see how long it takes them.

My question is - if and when they do catch up with me, can they demand 'backpayment'? Or just they just start collecting from the date they notice. I got my student loan in Sep 1998 - I think this makes me in the first wave of 'new type' loans as I understand it, that means they can't demand 'backpayments'

Can anyone clarify this for me?
  • OMG JoeBloggs, I'm in exactly the same position! Well, my husband is. He belongs in the post 1998 bracket, and has definitely been earning over the threshold for the last 5 years. His payments should be taken automatically from his employer but, like yours, they never have.

While I'm happy to have the £150 a month extra, obviously, I know a friend who was threatened with a CCJ unless he started paying his loan off, so I'm a bit worried about that.

Hope you get some useful replies!

Is anyone else getting fed up with their student finance application for 09/10?
I filled in the paperwork as a continuing student in February, got an email stating that I do not need to provide any further evidence and the application will be dealt with shortly. Two weeks ago (ish) I checked the progress to find that it now said that it was waiting supporting information. My husband finally managed to login on Monday and was just asked whether I was his only dependent. My application status yesterday was back to 'awaiting assessment'.

Today however I have an email from the SLC saying I need to provide evidence for my application and that if I logged on to my account there is an evidence summary of what I need to provide. Have just had a look and there's no such thing. I've gone through everything and nothing requests any evidence at all. I've sent them a message so hopefully they'll get back to me soon but I'm generally getting fed up. Just glad I was nosey enough to check, as they didn't even send a message to my husband asking for his supporting evidence.

I got the same email, and, like you, an Evidence Summary does not seem to exist. I ignored it, and a few weeks later had confirmation in the post of how much I'll be getting. So don't worry about it too much!
  • Anyone applied online with SAAS for 09/10? Far better than filling out those horrid purple forms from a few years ago.
Now have to wait 28 days to hear back.

I had a look on SLC website for the first time as now have login details to see my loan from my first degree a couple of years ago. It's a bit anoying that you can actually see any info - just the amount and your payment method.

Thanks, I'm just concerned because I had a lot of issues last year convincing the LEA that I was entitled to funding - I received 2 yrs funding 5 yrs ago but didn't complete the course due to serious illness. Even my previous university wrote a letter saying that it was serious mitigating circumstances. Just would rather not have to fight again :p
Ah well, hopefully it'll go the same way as you :)

Just so you know what sort of timescale it might be, I applied 4th March, got the email 'URGENT - Additional documents required to support your student finance application' on 26th March, then got my Final assessment showing the amounts I'll get next year on 9th April. My status now shows as Approved when I log in.
