LONDON, July 16 - The euro and sterling hit the day's highs versus the dollar on Thursday while the yen trimmed gains across the board, after strong second-quarter earnings from JPMorgan Chase stoked investor appetite for risk.
JPMorgan Chase <JPM.N> reported a net income of $0.28 per share in the second quarter of 2009, much more than expectations of around $0.05 [ID:nWNAB7753].
The euro <EUR=> recovered from early losses, rising to around $1.4137 according to Reuters data, up from around $1.4095 before the announcement.
Sterling rose 0.2 percent to $1.6462, also hitting the day's high, after spending much of the day in negative territory.
Both currencies relinquished early losses against the yen to trade roughly flat on the day, while the dollar also trimmed losses to trade around 94.05 yen <JPY=>, up from around 93.65 yen before the earnings were released.
"Traders and investors are buying pro-risk currencies like sterling and are selling yen after Q2 earings from JP Morgan, and Geithner banging the drum of global optimism," said Neil Jones, head of hedge fund FX sales at Mizuho in London.
"The market is responding."Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk
