  • LONDON, June 28 - Sterling extended gains on Monday, rising above $1.51 for the first time in nearly eight weeks.

Sterling <GBP=D4> reached the day's high of $1.5104, shortly after Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee member Andrew Sentance told Reuters that Britain's tough budget does not remove the need to start raising interest rates now.

Interest rates should be 5% or at least 1 or 2% the only reason we have a free money policy is political interference backed by distorted views of a man dead 50 years.

They found 800m barrels of north sea oil over the weekend which makes the sterling strength more justified . Also pru wont be paying aig 30bn dollars now, etc

Just in case anyone gets too cheerful, cable is still likely to continue down overall .
1.54 is the topside target roughly

  • 10:07 30Jun10 Gbp coming under some pressure post Posen

09:07 GMT - A relatively long [GBP] market is coming under some pressure.
Perhaps there is some disappointment that Posen did not leap into the
Sentance hawk camp, while month and quarter-end flows are impacting in
Eur/Gbp. A US prime name has been a noted Cable seller and the headline
has fallen below 1.50 for the first time in three days to 1.4998 so far.
Next stops through, 1.4990, we are told, but we will not give up on this
bull run at least until 1.4930/50 is clearly tripped.

Hi I am off on my hols to the good ole USofA in September. The exchange rate at the moment is the worst I have experienced in the 10 years that I have visited the USA.
    It's nail biting stuff
I would be happy if it would be approx $1.60
I am not really clued up on what really drives the exchange rate up or down. What important events impact the exchange rates or is it just traders' intuition? I would like to understand it better than just how many hamburgers my tenner is going to get me IYKWIM
