15:27 GMT - [A BIG UK DATA WEEK TO SMASH THE GBP RANGE?]

    Cable looks set to
finish the week around the mid-point of its range, with players growing
ever more tired of the current approximate 1.6100/1.6450 trade of the last
fortnight or so. Next week brings a packed UK calendar, packed with key
Jul data releases that will shed some light on whether growth finally
    turns positive in Q3.

  • 07:46 08Sep09 GBP/USD: Buoyed by Greenback Weakness, UN Wants USD Replacement

    London, September 8.

Cable has risen to an intra-day peak of 1.6411 in early European trade, as the
greenback suffers on the back of a UN report"s call for the replacement of the
USD with a global currency. "Replacing the USD with an artificial currency would
solve some of the problems related to the potential of countries running large
deficits and would help stability", according to Detlef Kotte, one of the authors
of the UN report (Daily Telegraph, B5).

GBP/USD is also eliciting support from speculation that Kraft might increase
its GBP 10.2bn bid for Cadbury--which Cadbury said "fundamentally undervalued"
the firm. Cadbury shares closed up 37.85% at 783 pence each yesterday. There is also speculation that Nestle and Hershey might join forces to make a rival bid
    for Cadbury.

    1.6445 (yesterday"s M&A news-fuelled 13-day high) is a sterling resistance
    level. 1.6326 was yesterday"s sell-off low from 1.6445.

Annualized UK like-for-like retail sales fell by 0.1% last month, according
to the BRC. UK July industrial and manufacturing production data will be unveiled
    at 08:30GMT.
